Playstation 3, A Casualty of war?
Casualty of war? What's New
By Henning Molbaek
FIRST ONLINE Jan 18, 2008

According to NPD the Xbox 360 sold 1.3 million consoles in December compared with 798,000 for the Playstation 3. The Wii sold 1.35 million.

Total install base in the US of the XBOX 360 is 9.2 million consoles. Playstation 3 has 3.3 million and the Wii 7.4 million.

The bestselling game Call of Duty 4 (that was released on both platforms, the best selling overall game was Halo3) sold 1.5 million on XBOX 360 outselling the Playstation 3 version by a factor of 3:1.

The problem third party developers have had with the Playstation 3 also showed in the statistics. 33 third party games had made it into the top 10 of the best selling on all platforms. Only five Playstation 3 games did the same.

Consumers spend $13.7 billion on the Video Game Console Industry (not including PC games) in 2007. $4.8 billion was on the XBOX 360, $3.5 on the Wii and $2.2 on the Playstation 3.

While Sony is clearly in front with Blu-ray in the HD format war they seem to be loosing in equal numbers when it comes to next generation games.

Could they have risked the Playstation as a gaming console in order to win the next generation HD movie format?

We'll see what happens throughout this year...it's going to be great for the PS3 and I think the potential of the system will really shine through.

maybe it's because PS3 owners use their PS3's for movies, not games...

ps3 has a great line-up of exclusive games coming out this year, and that alone should start closing the gap of hardware sales. and this winning format war should really boost ps3 sales even further. i have no doubt that ps3 will ultimately end up winning the console war in the long run.

If you dig around the PS3 section, you'll find topics addressing this already.

Basically, the PS3 is on par with sales against the X360 if you align the sales rates from starting point.

In other words, 12 months after the PS3's release it was selling as much as the X360 did 12 months after its own launch. Having a year long head start, the X360 should still be outselling the PS3. Sales volumes typically increase in subsequent years for things like video game consoles.

Don't worry about it. Sony's PS3 will be just fine in its gaming market. Give it time.

Yup. XBOX360 in 2nd year is quite established in the US, and their games centred around FPS are doing well.

Worldwide though, tells a different story. Here's a launch aligned cumulative sales chart. PS3 is actually selling more than what x360 was doing in its 13 month. Worldwide sales in december was higher for PS3 even though the X360 has done well in the US.

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?con...=All&weeks=156

The x360 is entrenched in the US so the world is seeing 3 game consoles for a while.

It is expected that as BD takes off, initially, some of the sales will go towards PS3 as a BD player, but eventually, more sales will be from standalones priced less than the PS3.

Sure. The amount of publicity from PS3 being the dominant blu-ray player on the market right now is incredible. By this alone Sony will reach a huge market that previously wasn't into video games, not to mention it's the machine of choice for movie buffs that also like games since its a 2-in-1 deal.

I don't see how the end of HD DVD could do anything but harm to the xbox. MS will have successfully captured the biggest market share in video games since the PS1, but I think it will be short lived. It wont take long for video games to move beyond DVD9.

The PS3 will eventually catch up. They killed themselves with their weak launch. Sky high price + no games + low supply = bad launch. The 360 was already into it's full swing of 3rd gen games and that did not help Sony's cause. 360 had a terrible launch but no real competition when they did it.

Plus their game lineup in 2007 was pretty pathetic (I can think of 3 "must buys"). All the big releases got pushed back for 2008. This will be a good year for games on the PS3, it is just a matter of whether the gaming community cares.

BTW, most of the people I know that own a PS3 bought it to play blurays and then games when they start coming out. Could that be said for you PS3 bluray guys??

I do not see how the end of HDDVD will hurt the 360, at least until the PS3 hits $299.

This year is going to be good for the following reasons:

Lower price.

MGS4
KZ2
Haze
LBP
GT5

and I don't know if these are slated for late this year or next but Resistance 2 and FFXIII

Blu-ray winning the format war paying dividends the other way and starting to increase sales of and boosting reasons to get a PS3 as opposed to PS3 sales boosting blu-ray adoption earlier in the war.

Large base of PS2 owners seeing the above and likely starting to buy into the PS3 along with people new to the console or gaming.

Well, what isn't mentioned is the fact that WORLDWIDE the PS3 is currently outselling Xbox360 for the last month...

I wouldn't exactly call that 'sacrificing' the ps3 for winning the high-def format war

Reminds me of a commercial:
Group of dumbasses: "Xbox360 sales are higher than the PS3 in North America. You've lost the console war." (They all leave)

Savvy investor: "My sales figures indicate the PS3 is leading sales in the whole world.... That's a pretty BIG share of market isn't it?"

Kind of interesting numbers to be considering. Given that the PS3 is outselling what the 360 was doing in it's first year, without competition.

Now, we should admit fully, that who cares about comparing this year to the last year that's not the point. The current sales are the current sales. And it is important.

I suspect the RROD warranty extension coupled with a renewed confidence in the newer system's failure rate had alot to do with it for the 360. And of course, the games.

The PS3 still lacks blockbuster titles [at least ones that I'm aware of].

Now, there is the price to pay. The PS3 being a Blu-Ray player dilutes it's sales numbers [honestly, how many folks here do you know own a PS3 solely for it to be a blu-ray player].

Personally, I'm interested in seeing how the blockbusters sell [and of course, if FF13 remains interesting to the gaming population].

Nice copy & paste job.
He only posted that to get us riled up.

Have you folks checked this guys posting history? He has said in previous posts that we Blu fans are "narrow minded" & "childish" because we, and I'm quoting:
"ban any discusions about HD-DVD or any other format" and "There are so many great movies you guy's are missing out on just because of outdated pig headed ideal's."

Last time I checked this was "Blu ray.com"

Just ignore this troll.

So what? It is pretty obvious as a person who has bought both that the XBox 360 is superior than the PS3 in terms of games. So it makes perfect sense that the XBox 360 is owning the PS3 in sales.

Resistance 2 is coming this year too, I think.

Wii and XBOX are essentially game consoles. It is doubtful that they can be used for anything else.

PS3 is an advanced machine that can also play games. In many respects, it is more advanced than either PC or Mac (e.g., look at the research at Stanford university).

It may take a few years before we can fully realize the potential of PS3. I believe PS3 has created a new paradigm for game developers and it will take a while before they fully understand its potential.

The people who compare PS3 with XBOX and Wii only demonstrate their ignorance. Perhaps, they should concentrate more on the comparison between the sales figures of PS2 and PSP with XBOX and Wii. PS3 is in a separate category by itself. You don't compare the sales figures for an IBM mainframe with a PC.
