I don't think it was stupid.

I think Ricshoe is correct BUT I never take a chance that there might be, could be, probably be a difference between running a cable from the player to the receiver to the TV vs running directly from the player to the TV.

I like eliminating the middle component (the receiver) and run directly to the TV JUST IN CASE! BUT it also depends on the quality of the player's video processor.

Aren't you the guy who did the HDMI cable shoot out? I think you are.
Anyway, if you go directly to the tv, how do you have the audio hooked up to your receiver? Just curious.

Edit: Yes you are that guy: https://forum.blu-ray.com/display-th...shoot-out.html

Assuming that your receiver can pass 3D video through it, then the answer should still be yes.

Also of note, Depending on your receiver some of them have Video Processors and Scallers in the HDMI pipeline. So For instance I have an onkyo TX-NR5008 that has ISF callibration capabilities that if I chose to enable them could alter the picture quality before it gets to the TV and bypassing the Receiver in that case would produce different picture quality issues. As for passing 3d, you would need a receiver with HDMI 1.4 (3d pass-through) in order to pass 3d signalling from the player to the tv through the receiver. If your receiver doesn't support 3d Pass-through then you would need to bypass your receiver and go directly to the TV to get the 3D to work.

If your receiver cannot pass the 3d and you bypass it by going to the TV then you may not be able to get lossless sound from the player to the receiver if you do not have a player with dual HDMI outs.

Thanks,
T

Just a heads up it doesn't look like the denon AVR 590 passes 3D so if you are using 3D you will not be able to pass that through your receiver. Maybe with the PS/3 its possible but I haven't tried it.

Thanks,
T

Yes, that was me.

Two ways to do it.

1) Run HDMI cable from player to TV, use multi-channel connection from the player to the receiver for audio.

OR

2) (as I have done) I own a player with two HDMI out lets. One to run directly to the TV and the other used for audio to the receiver. This way I am able to let the receiver's Audyssey do the audio calibration, bass management and DSX for my wides.

If one is able to run directly to the TV and bypass the receiver, all is well if 3D is needed.

That's what I figured.

I can see how this would work on a stand alone player, but the OP has a PS3 which doesn't have mulit-channel analog audio outs. If he wanted to he could run the HDMI cable to the TV and use an Optical cable for the audio, but would lose the lossless LPCM tracks, as it would only play in lossy Bitstream audio. I use a PS3 for watching Blu's as well, and the set up I use is to have my HDMI from the PS3 go to my Yamaha receiver and from there to my Sharp 42" TV.
And to the OP, there are no stupid questions, if we don't ask something how would we know what the answer is?
