Probably, which is why I'll wait for the 3D release, now that it's confirmed it will have one theatrically, which assures a 3D home video release soon after...

I was about to say the same thing. Nemo's getting a September theatrical rerelease in 3D, so assuming they continue the model used by Lion King, we'll see the BD shortly thereafter.
and no, I dont think we'll see a spring standard version.. also Little Mermaid September 2013 |

BatB 3D came out a year after the 2D version. The theatrical release in early 2013 suggests at a minimum that BatB 3D isn't returning to the Vault till at least April 30, the new Vault date Disney introduced this year. (It's possible Disney could send BatB 2D to the Vault as early as January 31, the old Vault date, and keep BatB 3D around till 2013; but I doubt it.) Quote:
The bigger news here is that Disney is even doing TLM in 3D. Unlike their other 3D upconverts, TLM's print was assembled the old-fashioned way, i.e., by lining up actual cels--under glass or in a multiplane camera (they had to rent one for TLM since Walt's old camera hadn't been used in decades and no longer worked)--and shooting each frame individually by hand. (Only the closing rainbow scene was done in CAPS.) Thus, either it will have to be upconverted to 3D from a 2D copy (please, no Clash of the Titans! ![]() Every DAC since (including BatB & TLK), and obviously every Pixar film, was assembled digitally; the original CGI rendering data and/or scanned cels are still in digital storage, barring improper backups. (That almost destroyed the original TS before they could make it 3D, but I'm sure both WDAS & Pixar do it better now--WDAS still keeps one CAPS machine solely to read their old backups.) They can all be converted to 3D simply by copying the original data files, then manipulating (or for CGI, re-rendering) the original elements for 3D. If they can go this route with TLM by scanning the original cels, then potentially *any* DAC for which the original cels still exist in Disney's real vault--maybe even all the way back to Snow White, since Disney is known for saving almost everything--could be upconverted to 3D the same way. (If they still have the original cels of Steamboat Willie--less likely--they could even create a 3D Mickey for the WDAS logo that way, though the current 3D WDAS logo leaves him in 2D.) I certainly hope Disney knows better and at least doesn't try to convert Walt's work to 3D. ![]() Last edited by RBBrittain; 10-05-2011 at 12:08 PM. Reason: Clarify |
