The Polk line probably gives you the best bang for the buck.

SAVE Your Money. there is NOTHING out there. you can try computer speakers but there just that, nothing great.

Sounds like your jumping the shark, HD sound on crapy speakers is just crap.

SAVE YOUR MONEY, forget HD sound for now, save-up at lease $800 for a 5.1 system & about $500 for a receiver.

Sorry, I am not too familiar with that market. You can go to a local Best Buy or Circuit City to take a look. At that price point, they are probably not a whole lot of choices.

Well, even going the used route you probably aren't going to stumble across anything decent for surround sound. However, if you look at Craig's list for your area or ebay (especially the former), some people would be surprised for what you can find in the way of good used equipment for $200. Just the other day I saw what appeared to be a well kept pair of old Polk Monitors, the original ones, not the ones out now, for about $200.

If you find a bargain, you could supplement that with a good center channel later when you have more money to spend and you're on your way. Depending on the pair you might find, you can get by without a sub-woofer for a while.

I wouldn't give up on finding decent sound as long as you are willing to get something used and are patient about looking. Even then, though, I wouldn't buy junk just for the sake of having something. Good luck.

The Onkyo you're looking at is much better then the other one you mentioned.

Save up another $450 or so. Don't waste your money on something that you'll hate just because you can afford it.

I have a little Yamaha set. For a small room, it's all I need. The woofer still has some pop to it. I paid I believe $199 for it. It's been 3 years and I can still get the walls to shake believe it or not. (It's small speakers)

You are absolutely right. If HD-DVD has taught us anything, cheaper is not usually the better route.

It would be very difficult to recommend anything at a 150-200 USD price point. If that is your absolute limit your best bet may be finding a HTiB. It would probably be best to save a bit more money for something better.

Thanks
I just built a system for my daughter using thr Sony STR-DG810, using all HDMI interconnects, and switching thru the receiver.
We used the Boston Acoustics MCS100 5.1 system, which has a good center speaker, 4 surrounds, and a 10" sub complete with cable. Speaker wire is also included, but it is too light.
We bought it thru Amazon.com, free shipping no tax, for $330. You won't find a better buy, and more importantly, you will get a few years of satisfying performance before you want to upgrade.
Good luck!
