Default Sony NX800 LED HDTV

Hey guys. I was wondering what your guy's thoughts are on the Sony NX800 series tv's? My fiance and I were looking at the 55inch the other day and it looks very very sharp and I was thinking of picking one up to MAYBE replace my 46inch KDLV5100. But before I do that I am doin some research on it and I thought I would get some opinions from my freinds on the forums.

Any thoughts guys and opinions?

Steve,

Is your setup in a bedroom or living room? I can't tell from the pics.

Thanks for getting back to me.

That's what I thought; do you not have a living room to do a HT setup in? IMO, that Sony you have -- or even the one you're considering -- would be great as a main viewing screen.

Hey hillside,

I am on the fence about this because my tv has been fantastic since I bought it way back in November of 09 and its going to be 2 years this November since I have had it and I havent had one issue with it, not one knock on wood! Blacks are excellent, PQ excellent, cant say enough about it really. My fiance says there is no need for a new tv and maybe she is right I dont know. The tv I am looking at, the NX800 has got some good reviews but the edge lit LED thing bothers me due its not full array LED which from what I have heard and read is better then the edge lit sets I dont know. I have 2 weeks to make up my mind. But yes my set would make a great main room tv which is what we intend to do when we move into our new place next spring, or it will be the new one I am looking at and like I said I have 2 weeks to make up my mind on that.

The NX800 was offered in a 52" whereas the NX810 is 55". The NX800 has issues with black levels and uniformity. Off axis viewing can also be an issue due to the edge lit backlighting. You can reduce, but not eliminate, these problems by adjusting the settings.

I'm currently considering upgrading to the HX929 and would like to get the 65" but not for $3500K more than the 55" version.

But do you have a HT setup in any kind of living room/media space?

Isn't Sony's 70" LCD model like 20 grand or something? I read that somewhere; I even saw it, I believe, on Amazon for even more than that...

Who in their right mind would pay 20K for a display? You can buy a cheap car for that...

Why does Sony charge so much for a 70, when they recently dropped the somewhat affordable 70" rear projection models they made, and every other 70" display manufacturer (Sharp, Mitsubishi) aren't charging anywhere near that for their sets? Of course, Mitsubishi's aren't LCDs, but still...

Hopefully the review on the HX929 helps. I love my current Sony tv but if I was looking for a replacement, this would be a slam-dunk!

rdodolak,

I told Hillside that I had 2 weeks to make up my mind about whether or not I am getting the 46 inch NX800. Well as of last night that decsion has changed and it boiled down to 2 things. One was what you said about issues with black levels and uniformity (which my current tv does not suffer from) and two I had a nice chat with a person that works with Home Theater magazine. He said the exact same things you did and said if I were to go the LED route then to go full array and skip edge lit sets. He also gave high praise for my current tv which (may not mean much to some) got a Home Theater Top pick. So that being said I have made up my mind to stay with my current set for as long as it holds out and spend my money on a good quality AV Reciever and speakers to round out my home theater experience which to be honest to get the best from my tv this is what it needs. Maybe I will even throw in an Oppo Blu ray player in the mix as well.

Who did you speak with at Home Theater? Were you able to get a direct line to Shane Buettner or Rob Sabin?

Rob Sabin Hillside. I used to talk with Shane all the time but from what I understand he's no longer with HT magazine

Shane is no longer with Home Theater -- I believe Sabin is actually the new editor.

I was also in tight with guys like their video editor Geoffrey Morrison (no longer there, but senior editor of another publication) and even Tom J. Norton.

Hey Hillside,

Sabin is the new editor and Tom Norton is a great guy. He gave me his settings that he used when they did a review on my tv awhile back.
