It was pretty crappy, Damon. It differs wildly from the book, which in and of itself wasn't a terribly imaginative read. But, if the film had been more closely adapted, it would have been loads better.

The effects on Saphira were quite nice, and probably the only redeeming factor of the film. It'd be great to examine her in all her detailed scaly Blu glory!! :P

No doubt it bombed at the box office but more importantly this a day and date release. Apparently Night at the Museum will be also. Kudos to Fox.

i found the movie to be terrible, but i think it because the butchered the book beyond recognition. I dont know how they are going to make the rest of the trilogy of movies when this one was so bad...!!!

Speaking as a person that didn't read the book...I enjoyed the movie. I just finished watching it. I would love to see the remaining two movies in this saga.

It seems that reading the book first is a no-no if you want to enjoy the movie. I have never heard a person say the movie was better than the book.

I would say try the movie out and judge for yourself, if you didn't read the book.

The movie got overwhelmingly negative reviews. I won't be able to resist renting it though to see the effects and the BD transfer.

I have not seen the movie myself, but that was because a bunch of friends of mine did and said it was horrible.

Default My Son hated the movie

My son who has read both of the books twice and is a huge fan simply hated the movie. For a year he looked forward to the movie coming out and had me take him to it on opening night. What he learned is that a movie cannot begin to fairly represent a 600 page book in a under two hour movie. The movie left important parts out and of course changed other elements. Since i had not read the book I was not as critical and thought the movie was OK, not great but entertaining enough. He so disliked the movie he has said he has no interest in owning it. I think if you are a fan of the book you should pass on the movie. If you have never seen it give it a try. It is worth a rental.

yeah,

I must admit that I didnt read the book and did enjoy the movie too. It's not exactly LOTR calibre, but being a fantasy movie fan I find it decent for it's first entry. Perhaps if the remaining two will get a much better production, but overall I liked it.

Exactly. I didn't read the book, either. If you just want a fun fantasy movie, and are willing to accept it for what it is, it's an enjoyable movie. I'm sure it looks great, too.

I know you can't always go by the critics, but the website, "rottentomatoes", is usually pretty good. Eragon got a 16% out of 100%. I've never seen a movie rated that low. Here is a sample of a couple of the movie critics' reviews.

For those who love the fantasy genre known as sword and sorcery -- and I count myself in their number -- sitting through the movie version of Eragon will suck the will to live right out of you.

“Eragon” is laughably bad, mind-bogglingly derivative, and easily one of the worst movies of the year. Do your kids a favor and flick cigarettes in their face for 100 minutes instead. They’ll thank you later.

Oh please. this movie was written by a 15 year old and it shows. And all he really did was take the plot from Star Wars. Ugh.

And Rotten Tomatoes is pretty damn accurate for what it is: a bunch of people's opinions. You can get a pretty good feel for a movie there.

Although I haven't seen the movie itself, it would be hard for it NOT to be derivative and cliched when Paolini's book itself is afflictted by that problem. It's a decent yarn for a young reader - it's target audience - but there are far too many ripped-off ideas from LOTR, Star Wars, Wizard Of Earthsea, Dragonriders of Pern, and a multitude of other, better sources that older fantasy fans would probably find it dull and extremely unoriginal. There is not a single original concept in Eragon or Eldest frankly and I'm not surprised the movie is being damned for the same issue.

I think rotten tomatoes is highly accurate. I didn't see the movie but everyone i know who made the mistake of doing so found the movie to be awful. The book was really good and I wish they could have at least got close. I was expecting something along the Lines of Lord of the Rings as far as craft and production goes but instead we got a crappy movie that was really made for TV.
