Movies seen in theatres that defined your childhood.

I feel sorry for today's kids and the mindless CGI shit that passes for movies fit for child consumption these days. It sure as hell wasn't like that back in the 80s. My youth was filled with landmark movies (to me) that shaped the person I am and helped refine my tastes at an early age.

My list of special movies:

Harry and the Hendersons - Seen at the now long gone Cannon Cinema (actually owned by Golan/Globus). The movie is only 110 minutes long but they still had an intermission and the hawkers coming round selling drinks and popcorn.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit - It may sound stupid but this started off my love affair with Film Noir. I walked out of the theatre in awe of Alan Silvestri's closing score. Sent goosebumps up my skin.

Ghostbusters II - I was word-perfect on the first film when I was 8. By the time the sequel came out I was in Florida, in the cinema at the Orlando shopping mall (or near it), when I saw the cardboard standee for GBII i just about died of excitement. The movie scared the hell out of me, but I'll never forget it.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - A year later, same cinema. Wow! I don't think I blinked once during the whole film. I walked out massively excited by those hip-hops tunes over the end credits. I was buzzing for days.

Waterworld - Seen this just a few days before I...erm...became a man. The massive escapism and exotic seascapes certainly matched the summer of 95, which, for me, is when I discovered I had much for freedom in the world than I had as a young child.

Die Hard 3 - It didn't come out here till August 18th. I waited all summer for this film. And what a summer it was. I'll never have those days again.

The Goonies - One of the best kids movies ever made. Saw it opening week when I was 6 years old. Still one of my all-time favourites. Watch it every year on Oct 26 - the day the kids head-out on their adventure.

I've been seeing horror movies in theatres since I was 7. The very first Scream. So a lot of horror movies.

For me...it could ONLY be....Jaws! Scared the $hit out of me (I was 8). When the head popped out, I cried, LOL!!! My dad laughed at me but that was some scary $hit!!

The Lion King (1994)
One of the greatest animated movies ever. Loved it as a kid, though it was an emotional rollercoaster. Appreciated it even more as an adult.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995)
From 1993-1998, everything was Power Rangers. Ninja chick was hot. Pink Ranger was hot. The costumes were awesome. I loved the movie's opening and everything else was so cheesy.

Star Wars Trilogy: Special Edition (1997)
Now I had been a Star Wars fan for 6-7 years up to this point and wasn't even born when they had come out originally. I had all the toys, had everything Star Wars, so seeing it on the big screen was awesome.

Titanic (1997)
I had a grudge against this movie for the longest time, because it beat Star Wars to be the #1 movie of all time. Add the DiCaprio fangirls and cheering in the theater when DiCaprio bobbed up and down and died. I appreciate this movie much more as an adult.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
First movie I ever saw more than one time in the theater. I saw it 4 times. Of course that was broken by seeing Half-Blood Prince 12 times in the theater. I don't care what anyone says and people make a 90 minute video trashing it, but I loved it.

Influential Films From my Youth:

1. The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966)--saw it on TV and loved the Haunted House and Don Knotts as Mr. Chicken. (intro. to horror)

2. Jaws (1975)--saw it at the theatre and was scared outta my wits. (1st time really scared-enhanced my love of horror)

3. Star Wars (1977)--saw it at the theatre and was flatout blown away. (enhanced my love of Sci-Fi which began with Star Trek:TOS).

Star Wars (1977) at the drive in... and when it was rereleased each summer for the next couple of years - that's the movie that got me hooked on movies. It was my favorite movie of all time until 1997 and has since been falling down my list as George continues to milk the franchise to death. Still it hold a fond place in my heart as it reminds me of my younger days, now my son is enjoying the stuff I grew up on.

Back To The Future (1985)
- I was 9 years old. Still one of my favorite movies.

Big Trouble In Little China (1986)
- I picked this as the movie to see with my parents on my 10th birthday.

Splash (1984)
- I was 8. I will never forget Daryl Hannah walking up to the Statue of Liberty.

Spaceballs (1987)
- Saw this with my dad when I was 11. This was part of a double feature at the local cinema. I have no clue what the other movie was. Spaceballs was all that mattered.

Batman (1989)
- At 13 years old this was the greatest movie ever made. My friends and I saw it too many times to count.

Return of the Jedi (1983)
- Darth Vader was walking up and down the aisles during the movie. NOTHING will ever beat that in the eyes of a 7 year old!

For me it would have to be Star Wars.

Saw it at a theater in Denver that had great sound and a large curved screen. Parents took brother and I and we were literally blown away by the presentation. Continue to look for that same sensation in movies to this day
