Default PS3 fan question

I have a one of the old fat PS3 the fan some times kicks up really loud and other times it stays pretty quite. I have cleaned the PS3 and the fan but still making the noise. Is there anyway besides replacing the fan to make it less noisy?

Sometimes it's to do with dust blocking the air vents or where the console is situated, how much room the machine has to breath, but it can also be normal for your particular console. My 60gb model runs flawlessly, I've never had a single problem with it and it's as quiet as a whisper all the time, but my 40gb PS3's fan always kicks into overdrive about 10 minutes after turning it on. I sent it off to Sony a couple of years ago when it was still under warranty, and it come back exactly the same, with the fan kicking in to overdrive within 10 minutes of turning the console on. Other than the fan on my 40gb console running loudly at times, I've never had any other problems with the machine, it plays back every disc just fine, and it has never frozen or failed in anyway over the last 3 years.

I've got about 6-8 inches of clearance from the wall and nothing else is around it . It might be how you were saying your 40 gb one is cause it does take about 10 mins before it kicks on also with mine I have never had a problem with playing any discs just the fan noise.
