United Kingdom OFFICIAL: We're buying too many Blu-rays in the UK

I was thinking there's a lot being sold but it's people in France, Germany, Australia, Canada, USA and lots of places buying them cos they're so darn cheap usually!

Don't tell the manufacturers that though!

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/11...ay_up_uv_wait/

I just heard on the news that ASDA has bought Greece. Not sure how that'll affect their Blu-ray imports

Good news

I find it funny how it's from someone at Fox who says it though, yet their reason for not releasing many catalogue titles in the UK is because of poor demand (according to the many emails I have from them).

Well, would you look at that?

Looks like we've got our priorities in check here in the UK! I wonder why we've taken to the HD revolution so strongly? There's certainly been a significant price-shift over the past 18 months, with blus regularly coming down to bargain prices (circa £5) and new titles dropping into offers (2 for £15 etc.) very quickly.

That was my first thought, so why are Fox & Warner not releasing more catalogue here? We're still waiting for a Die Hard Box Set!

I'm in the U.S., and the U.K. has been a godsend for smaller independent and foreign films on Blu-ray.

In the U.S, the studios (save Criterion) seem to mainly be interested in releasing "popcorn" Hollywood movies. I probably read this forum more than the U.S. one.

Why wouldn't sales be up? We finally have our movies in the best possible format. Back when I thought Laserdisc and then DVD were the ducks nuts, this format blows 'em away. I wonder what's next

Blu-ray sales are going to go through the roof over Christmas, prices are falling everyday, I just bought my first brand new sub £3 Blu-ray this week. Bee.com are selling Cass for £2.45 and AVP for £3.99, crazy prices
Now I need to go buy some more shelves to put them on

Apparently, yet there's still things not being released over here (I'm looking at you Deadwood). I know it's a different distributor, but if this news is true you'd think they'd at least try and push it through.

I'm just amazed DVDs are still selling, but I'm pleased to hear that Blus are selling so well. I'm fairly confident though that in the next couple of years DVDs will be gone.

I hope now that Blu-rays have now got an increased market share that studios will release even more blu-rays, I'm looking at unreleased ones in the UK like Die Hard 3.

It must be the members of Blu-ray.com and other people of the interwebs who are doing all the buying because even the more tech savvy and (large) HDTV owning friends of mine have barely a dozen BDs each. In the real world I have a huge collection but here I might even be below average

Most common thing I hear when it comes to Blu is 'I can't really tell the difference'

Doubt that, to many movies on DVD which are not and will probably not be released on DVD.

Can't see Futurama (original 4 seasons) Simpsons on Blu. Would love Jaws but cannot see that for a few years.

I'm a huge fan of 80's movies, and Horror.. Cannot see House Collection, Wishmaster, Puppet Master and many low budget 'forgotten' classics. I have Childs Play on region free... I doubt I'll see a Childs Play box set of all 5 movies on Blu (probably priced at £40) And would't buy it either. Why, if I'm a fan... Like the Saw box set. I have all on DVD and they look mint on an upscaler, not worth £65 for a slight improvement.

Also old TV shows, I'm glad I have Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, Game On, Red Dwarf and (original) V collection..... Can you see any being released on Blu ??

There are many DVD's I own which on an upscaling player can be just as crisp, remember the feeling watching DVD compared to VHS on some 'old' movies like Ghostbusters, Gremlins.... Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars etc. In fact I cannot find fault with the Indiana Jones on an upscaler, Ultimate editions of James Bond or Jaws. I watched The Seventh Sign on DVD (1988 Demi Moore) this afternoon, was great PQ, much better then VHS - Doubt that'll be released on Blu ?

It seems to me and a good few on this forum, there is not the same feeling between DVD and BR... Is Gremilns that same leap in quality from DVD to BR, not by the reviews I've read... Even Star Wars has many moans and that is £70 to own.

I have about 1900+ Dvds and around 150 Blu's, some double dips like Scarface, both Dawn and Day of the Dead, Back to the Future, Matrix and they are an improvement. So I'm all for Blu and tend to buy new releases on Blu, but I cannot see DVD dying out like VHS because there isn't that huge improvement I mentioned, on the older 'favourites'.... some even have less special/extra features then the DVD releases.

The studios would be insane to cut off a huge proportion of UK (or worldwide ones for that matter) households (I'm no benchmark but I don't know anyone who hasn't got a DVD player) by stopping DVD production.

The only thing I see is the two products merging (with the DC) on the shelves and been packaged together. My local HMV combines their chart with the two formats and it shows quite clearly the gaps in the BD market.

Would you like to put money on that? I'd feel quite safe with any bet I made to the contrary.

BD might be on the rise, but most people on the high street still don't know what it is and when you tell them, still don't care.

DVD's here for a while yet.

Even if you only had a DVD player, surely the marginal additional cost of a triple play set would be worth it to 'future-proof' yourself. I'm already grabbing the super-play (3D+2D+DVD+DCD) where I can, even though I don't have a 3D TV yet. Just makes sense, and will save re-purchasing in the future when I'm set up for 3D.

On another note, I read somewhere that Australia Post is having to change its business model to accommodate the deluge of parcels arriving from overseas. Us Aussies like online shopping, particularly with items like BDs that are cheap to ship. And when a local new release title costs AUD40 (~GBP26), it's a no brainer to buy from Amazon for GBP13.
