Default Any Canadians import receivers?

I'm seriously considering the Yamaha V1800, but it's so expensive here. I saw a store on ebay selling for just over $800US. Considering it. Anyone buy one? If so, what kind of taxes were you hit with?

The one on ebay probably has no warranty.

Doesn't matter what they say in the ebay auctions, but if you are in Canada and you purchase a receiver from the USA the warranty is void. You will get no warranty at all from Yamaha Canada.
I checked all this stuff out before buying my RX-V1800.. i ended up getting it for $1100CND taxes in.. not bad when you consider the $800 on ebay is going to cost you $100 to ship it, then taxes & duty on $800.. so pretty much $1000.
And this way i still have my 2 year warranty.

Ah yeah some places on ebay say the receivers have a warranty.. if you email them and ask questions, you'll see that's it the seller himself that is giving you a warranty. Meaning if your receiver breaks,, you need to pay to ship it back into the USA, wait a month, then re-pay duty & taxes on it when it comes back into Canada, depending on the shipping company. UPS is the worst!

Here’s probably a good answer on how much money you’d save. I work for a customs broker in Canada, so deal with importing all the time. When I was putting together my home theater recently I looked to the US to save me money… and ended up getting my receiver here in Canada.

As said above, very similar price (one of the few things that is).

it depends how they ship it, it usually costs $50 for shipping. if they send it UPS u'll be hit with taxes and brokerage fees so thats like another $50 for brokerage and whatever the tax will be, if u live near the border like me u can ship it to a receiver just across the border and go pick it up.

as for the warranty many ebay stores offer In-House warrantys for a year sometimes for free sometimes for a fee, if thats a concern

i bought a v669 for $350 and $125? in brokerage/taxes (shoulda shipped to border cross but i was lazy) still more then half the price compared to futureshop/etc at the time

edit: and if ur shipping to a border crossing u can buy from websites with similar prices as ebay that ship for free in the USA, etc

...i would be particularly careful buying larger ticket electronics from ebay. Sometimes, 'B-stock' products are sold as 'new' hence the discount. Do your own due diligence.

As to others making blanket statements about 'receivers not having warranty' if imported from US into Canada.....that is simply incorrect. If the posters of those comments are only referring to Yamaha..it 'may' be true.

Plenty of electronics manufacturers will honor warrantys on products imported from US. Many a time others will, only if you ship at your cost to service depot in states...which isn't as bad as it sounds. Other manufacturers, have new 'North American' warranty policies that address cross border shopping. Phone the manufacturer in both countries and get the info from them. I recently bought a Samsung lcd for kitchen from States....& Samsung USA said the unit would be servicable under warranty in Canada, the merchant agreed...but when i phoned Samsung Canada...they said 'no it wouldn't'. I bought it anyways & inside it had an insert entitled 'North Amercan Warranty' so the US guys were right.
I've also had an expensive Integra Research Premap service under warranty in the US
& i imported it initially from US to Canada.

Also, customs/dutys are not written in stone....so i would take any blanket statements form people saying well 'UPS charges duty' & somesuch with a grain of salt. Items manufactured in the states are duty exempt...but there are processing fees related to carrier that vary depending on their service level.

A good example is sometimes it's no cheaper to go UPS Ground because w/ Ground they ding you at the door for a 'Customs Processing Fee'...iirc 30-40 bucks whether there's duty or not....with UPS Express this 'Processing Fee' is included in price & at the end of the day it may even be cheaper than 'Ground + processing fee'.

If you get in contact with carriers like UPS they will explain all the fees how they work etc....you can also call Canada customs & find out exactly what a specific piece of gear coming from US will create for duty charges.

It's worth it to research it yourself directly with customs/carrier & also manufacturer for warranty.

I would recommend buying from a big online merchant like jr.com before ebay.....they will discount you a lot more if you phone em for a quote etc.

...just all things for you to consider.

I ordered my Yamaha Rx-v661 receiever from an Ebay store called Ugotadeal, and even after shipping and duties I paid about $500. I only have 1 electronics store in my town and they were asking $799 plus Tax and it only came with a 1 year warranty. It may be a risk as Im pretty sure my receiver isnt covered by warranty, but over $300 in savings was well worth it to me, hell I could almost buy a 2nd one with the savings I got if it does ever crap out.

I've tried buying a PS3 controller and a receiver from amazon.com but they do not ship these type of items. However, they do ship movies of course.

How long is the warranty in canada? Generally I've had quite a few receivers and they ALL last more than 1 or 2 years... never had a problem with any of them even up to 5 years. Maybe you'd be safe without a warranty??
