United Kingdom John Carpenter on Blu.....

Looking to upgrade a few of my DVDs with Santa , Prince of Darkness and Big Trouble in Little China.

Anyone with any news on UK releases ? I always thought of BTILC as a popular movie here and Prince of Darkness sold out on DVD a while ago.

I am aware the US, as always, have many more releases then here and a much wider choice.... Seems our little island is left behind AGAIN , for movie collectors.....I am not that interested in importing, have a couple but prefer our fat BR cases

Any updates would be great, thanks

John Carpenter hasn't been exactly been given the respect his films deserve in the UK. So far only:

The Thing
The Fog
Escape From New York
The Ward
Elvis
Halloween
Escape From L.A.
Ghosts of Mars
They Live

I don't think any of these are really stellar releases (They Live was recalled or has gone OOP). Dark Star has bounced around the release schedules as well if I remember correctly.

As for the titles you've mentioned Big Trouble.... has had a few European releases if you don't want to go for a slim US case.

Both dire upscaled transfer's.

US version of 'Escape From New York' is the way to go if your a fan.

Not sure if that is a tip or a nod to, The Fog

Bought Escape from New York, just love that movie. Have the US 2 disc DVD with comic, but bought UK Blu as cinema system + 50" in the lounge.
(multi reg DVD and 42" in the bedroom, but always thought about watching it surround sound and bigger screen)

Gutted about They Live! There is an Italian release, but I want UK box AND English text. Sound like fussy so and so, but I like what I like.

The Big Trouble euro releases, are they english text or is it grande difficulté dans la petite Chine (thanks Google !)

Again, maybe I'm just too fussy......

That was the thought behind it. Seriously though, as other members and reviews have already said..... it's very poor. It's an offence in itself that Carpenter's titles don't get the proper treatment and respect they deserve.

Halloween on the other hand......

Haven't upgraded my 25th A.E 2 disc DVD yet.....

It shows how a low budget, late 70's movie can be uplifted, though ....
Take note Mr Lucas

Ghosts of Mars has not been released on Blu-ray in the UK.
It was going to be, but the release got pulled by Sony.

You're missing out if you ain't got 'Halloween' yet. It's well worth a buy. 'The Thing' is also tip top.

As for Lucas... well...

Opps. Of course you're right KingSimba, it was due by 19/10/2009 but never got to the starting gates.

Basically if you're a UK Carpenter fan looking for a HD fix you're screwed.

What's the problem with importing, Surely actually having the Film is more important than how it looks on the shelf

Import the US Big Trouble In Little China
US Ghosts Of Mars
French Vampires
Italian They Live

Problem solved

I do have these, on DVD. I have a pretty good Panasonic upscaler and a decent home system.
I said I was fussy, but I would like to buy UK release Blu's. These were all released on DVD here and all sold well (I guess as some verisons sold out etc) They are popular movies.

I'll wait, but was hoping there was news on the horizon.......

Why should I/Anyone have to import?? These have been produced AND released ? Why not here? Italian, French - are they heavier media buyers?? I read on this forum UK is the 2nd largest BR buyer.......

We most probably are but unfortunately it's probably mainly new release films that people buy here on Blu-ray, and not so much catalogue titles, which I feel the main reason for this is the stupid prices that some of the studios give them in the UK.

I totally agree with you though, I would much rather not import and buy the UK release.

Im sure the catalogue titles mentioned will eventually come out in the UK though, you just have to be prepared to wait a while.

If your happy with your DVD's that's fine, Just suggesting to import if you wanted the Films now. Nothing on the release schedule for the UK market anytime soon.

Watched They Live (Italian) a few nights ago and it looked and sounded great. Of the UK releases of Carpenter Films I have, 2 are clearly upscales and are easily the worst in my collection. Eagerly awaiting MGM to release The Fog in the US, Hope they do as good a job as their EFNY disc.

Not really expecting too much myself really from the prequel, but Carpenter's 'The Thing' will always be a classic.

I'm suprised Fox still haven't released Big Trouble in Little China in the UK, it's one of their biggest selling catalogue releases.

Don't be that suprised, it's pretty obvious by now that Fox hate us over here.

Big Trouble in Little China has been released in the US, Canada, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Brazil and Norway but nothing about it in the UK yet they do distribute it over here aswell.

Fox are the worst studio when it comes to releasing much here in the UK, and I'll keep saying that until they ever actually do pick up their game and release more than a quarter of the catalogue titles they release in the rest of the world per year.
