Default "New" blu-rays with finger prints on them?

I just now opened my The Crazies blu-ray that I bought for $10 during Walmart's Halloween sale.

There were 3 finger prints on the disc when I opened it. They easily wiped off though. The sticker on top of the blu-ray was still on. Also, the case is messed up pretty good. Plastic wrap stuck to the side... and there's 4-5 scratches on the spine of the case that went through and scratched the artwork as well. It's like Freddy Krueger must've been browing the Walmart blu-rays, picked up the copy I bought before I bought it, and put it back down.

I need to pay attention next time I purchase. I also need to molest the blu-ray before I buy it and make sure there's no damage.

Anyone else have this problem?

I had fingerprints show up my copy of There Will Be Blood when I purchased it from Amazon. They wiped off easily and the disc played fine, but it definitely weirded me out. I didn't bother returning it.

Hmm, not sure why you have to do that.

I can't pretend to know the actual production process of BDs, but I assume there's points in the chain where they could be touched by a factory worker. All it takes is doing so without gloves and... you have a fingerprint on a new BD.

I could take my blu-ray disc to the police station and say "whoever broke into my house, touched this disc" and they could find out who did it.

This has happened to me a few times, particularly with a Universal or Paramount disc. But it happened a whole lot more during my DVD buying days, especially with box sets. Why they don't use gloves is a mystery to me.

I'd rather have a finger print than a scratch.

By the way, a microfiber cloth is great for removing finger prints. But not just that, I've also had these weird little smudges on some discs as well.

Maybe I fail to see how this is important. If the disc plays fine from start to finish what does it matter what the bottom of the disc looks like? I mean there could be a treasure map on the bottom of the disc for all I care, but if it plays fine without any problems then I have no qualms about it.

So far, I haven't gotten any fingerprints on any new Blu-ray, but it is odd that they're not using gloves when handing the discs. Then again, most discs are made in Mexico nowadays.

This was one of the many bizarre discussions that took place in the Star Wars thread.

Needless to say there are people putting discs into cases on production lines. It's not The Jetsons where a factory is one big automaton with no human involvement.

The only time I really properly check a blu-ray is if a disc popped loose or it was bought used. Otherwise, I just pop the sucker in.

Don't molest the blu rays, it's how I ended up on the sex offenders registry. But no, I have not had this problem, but it would make me very

No, actually there is a machine that inserts the disc into its casing. I'm not saying there is no human contact during the production process, but it is very, very miniscule.

I don't check underneath the discs very often, but I have had this happen with two DVDs: Tamara and The Mist 2-disc special edition. The Tamara one was pretty scratched up too, but it played fine. With The Mist, you could see the print of someone's entire finger stretched across the first disc, not just the print from the end of the finger.

Tamara was bought from Wal-Mart and The Mist was from Best Buy.

The extra weight must've cost a fortune to ship.

It varies depending on the factory. Some have equipment that does it, if it's 1-disc standard BD cases. But I've seen videos from pressing plants, where packaging was done manually by workers from big spindles of finished discs.

And special or custom BD cases almost always need manual disc insertion too.

Is it possible workers sometimes steal BD discs for themselves and all that's packaged is a BD case and slip...like the member got in the American Beauty thread.

I've bought quite a few brand new blu's which have had finger prints on them, but they always come off very easily. As long as the brand new disc isn't scratched, that's all I care about. I will always take back a brand new disc which has scratches on it, I don't want to watch every movie I buy from start to finish to check if it works as soon as I buy it. Most of my blu purchases are upgrades from my DVD versions, and I just put them on my shelf until I feel like watching them which could be a year from the date I purchase them, so I don't want to discover in a years time that a scratch/scratches on a disc in fact does affect the playback in some way.
