Damn. As Universal has probably only used one master for all releases of this title the German and British one won't look any better.

Do you own it? Any evidence for the comments or just rumour?

I think people will have to start reducing their expecations with back catalogue or stick with DVDs.

I can't imagine this being anything amazing no matter the distributor. We'll have to wait and see.

screens online- I agree with you about expectations, i have the legend of 1900 imported and it isn't great (as expected) but I am happy with it, but this is just a disaster.

[Show spoiler]

Dude, those images look fab to me!

I seen this in the cinema that's what that looks like above. Of course I prefer my motion picture to be in motion -so I'll discount those screengrabs until I see the film (always best to see things being passing comment obviously) on Blu-ray.

Just not decided on which release to go for.

^ Although I am 100% in agreement with regards to screencaps that does look a bit average to me. It has all the hallmarks of a Universal catalogue - old master with some DNR applied and then EE to sharpen it up.

Having said that, those screencaps are jpegs and have compression issues on them big time so the line where transfer issues end and image compression issues begin is a little questionable.

I just picked this up in Australia for $11. Haven't watched it yet, but thought I'd point out that it is one of those discs that has the ratings for the UK, Australia, Germany and a few other European countries on the disc label.

So the outside packaging is unique to Australia (with the huge "M" rating label on the front), while the disc is most likely the same one used in different territories. Not sure where the disc is manufactured though.

I'm hoping that it will be an improvement over my region 1 DVD, even if only modest.

Just checked the German BD (which is similar to the Australian one like bugsy has already told us) and the picture looks much better in motion. No DNR but a very very grainy picture. I am quite happy with this release.

I have had a chance to view this bluray in a side-by-side comparison to the region 1 DVD.

As Howie says, the bluray image is quite grainy - this reflects the way the film was shot, with many scenes in low light. I saw no significant DNR. The colours look very nice. Some of the more brightly lit scenes are very sharp.

This is so far in advance of the region 1 DVD, it's not funny. I can't comment on other DVD versions, but the US disc was never very good. The aspect ratio on the DVD is a bit strange, in that it has narrow bands on the left and right edges. Perhaps it wasn't authored correctly. In any case, the bluray fills the widescreen TV width, meaning that there is a very slight loss of information at top and bottom compared to the DVD.

The sound on the bluray is much better too. Some scenes really pop out at you.

In all, I am very glad I bought this. The only downside is the complete lack of any extras - even the crappy DVD had some deleted scenes.

I love this film but deleted scenes are as much use as a string of pearls to an ape. Real shame the distributor doesn't give a **** about film fans.

The French 2DVD CE (there was 2 in fact from Wild Side Video and BAC/Paramount) was always the best for special features so I've just bought it.

Although the French home video rights have reverted to Universal their upcoming February Blu-ray has no sign of any special features. Those may be lost forever on DVD. For those thinking about that 2DVD its this one http://www.ebay.co.uk:80/itm/390331811267 or http://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0001E70EO/ or http://www.amazon.fr/dp/B000YQ8BGA/ Rough translation of what's on the 2nd disc from Google transtraltion (original page in French)

The UK 5 Blu-ray Coen set is back at £14.95 http://www.zavvi.com/blu-ray/the-coe.../10549758.html

This is much better than the DVD but it also has a *lot* of EE, making it look quite unnatural. Still, unless Fox puts out a better version, this is the best way to view it. And its currently only $11.

The site’s database seems to think Umbrella are releasing this in Australia on January 6th 2021, but I haven’t seen this claimed anywhere else?

I’m surprised none of the European labels have licensed the film and Kino extras.

Hopefully this is a special edition and not just the film alone

No double dip for me unless they use a less EE'd transfer and/or add decent extras.
