I thought the movie was lame when I watched it on DVD but they more I read I just have to grab the BD. Or at the least rent it.

The only downer for me on the BD version is that it doesn't have the DTS track that the SD did but pic quality is damn good.

Seriously... this disc was completely off of my radar, I even passed on it at Fry's yesterday. But I'm sure given the opportunity to pick this one up, I will.

I take it you not able to take advantage of LPCM?

Just running fiber optic for DD & DTS 5.1 (6.1) for now. I'm not buying a new receiver just for that. Aint gonna happen. When mine conks out years down the road I'll do it then but at that point they'll have totally new technology.

It's odd. Reign is the second BD I've bought that didn't have the DTS that the SD did. Kinda dissapointing but I'll get over it.

You can get uncompressed PCM over digital optical. It gets downfolded to stereo so you lose the discrete surrounds. Apply Pro-logic and enjoy 4.6 mbps audio.

That IS an option but in Pro-Logic2 I lose the control of my sub and the bass is too weak so I'll stick with the DD. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Thumbs up

Greetings,

I can vouch for the quality of both the audio and video of Reign. The uncompressed PCM track is incredible.

It's a film thats really grown on me over time. It's likely the theatrical poster did more harm to the film than good...

DD on DVD is 448kbps max - some are 384kbps or lower if you also consider stereo and mono encodings. DD on this BD is 640kbps, which is DD's full lossy bitrate. For reference, it would be something like comparing 768kbps DTS, which is what is available on most DVDs, including Reign, to 1536kbps DTS - the full DTS bitrate that DVD spec allows, which was used early on for DVD, but abandoned by DTS to attract greater support of their codec on DVD. Put another way, the DD track on this BD should be more transparent to the master than the DTS track on the DVD. Of course none are in league with the PCM track.

BTW, Ralph P. (above) did the Usual Suspects BD review for the Spot. He also did Reds, ATL and maybe one or two others that I can't remember. I expect I'll be asking him to help out with BD reviews more in the future, especially once production starts ramping up. I expect it'll be a very busy fall.

Sorry for draining your wallet. I can relate. I feel like I stay in dept just trying to keep our equipment up to date for reviews. Reign isn't perfect, but it offers a movie experience that's up there with the best I've had. I always enjoyed the movie before (again, with dragons or dinosaurs I'm an easy target), but this time I was literally overwhelmed. It's definately one I would use to show off the format. Problem is there are so many out now that fit the bill, it's getting hard to choose between them when company comes over.

That's awesome. These are the kinds of "problems" I like to have...too many choices
