What did you think was the matter with Dunst - just depressed or some little early mid-life crisis? She was crazy just like her parents. I have to watch it again, but I could have sworn that the movie established that her crazy behavior had happened repeatedly in the past. Through out the whole movie, people close to her were hoping that Dunst would get through the night without making "a scene" (aka an act of craziness). The only time that Dunst is somewhat perceived as being normal is just the limo scene in the beginning. She is not just some regular girl nervous about the whole wedding ceremony. She is obviously crazy in a realistic way. When I say crazy, I mean "someone with serious mental problems that has issues dealing with reality." Not Loony Tunes movie cliche crazy. This movie is a good depiction of people with mental problems - ones that aren't embarrased to show it (Dunst) and ones that like to hide it and think that they are all normal (Gainsbourg). Dunst is obviously the more mental one, but Gainsbourg tries to bury her mental probs too.

I don't think thats what her sister meant by making a scene. I think the "dont make a scene" comment by Claires character was telling Justine to not act as if the world was coming to an end (pun partially intended ). I think Justine looking extremely sad on her wedding day was "making a scene" in Claires eyes.

I never got the sense that she was crazy like her parents.... Just clinical major depression.

[Show spoiler] But if the opening scene is a vision or a visual representation of what she is feeling/sensing then it would explain her strange behaviour.

How ever Her behaviour isn't really all that weird until her mother starts saying stuff like " Enjoy it while it lasts" Infact, I would say her mood and behaviour was completely normal.

I am Not fully dismissing her have some sort of Illness, like depressions or something. Just simply saying that she may have know about this Apocalypse for a long long time.

the part I like most of this movie is the intro, absolutely amazing!
well, at first, I thought the video has some error, because the frame seems to be stopped, but then I realized it was palyed very slowly and it's great!

Cannes 2011 Jury Preferred ‘Melancholia’ Over ‘Tree of Life,’ but Wouldn’t Award von Trier

Quote:
Terrence Malick won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2011 with “The Tree of Life,” a drama that’s widely considered one of the best Cannes winners in history. However, it turns out Malick’s magnum opus was not the original frontrunner among the competition jury members. Speaking to the French publication Liberation (via The Film Stage), Olivier Assayas confirms it was Lars von Trier’s “Melancholia” that most won over the jury’s heart. Assayas served on the jury alongside Robert De Niro, Jude Law, Uma Thurman, actress Martina Gusmán, producer Nansun Shi, writer Linn Ullmann, and filmmakers Mahamat-Saleh Haroun and Johnnie To. De Niro was the jury’s president, and Assayas said the actor was “rather unfamiliar with international cinema.”

According to the “Personal Shopper” and “Clouds of Sils Maria” director, only Jude Law and himself believed from the start that “The Tree of Life” was worthy of the Palme d’Or. The majority of jury members favored “Melancholia,” which Assayas had no complaints over because it’s a “magnificent” film. What led jury members to switch from team von Trier to team Malick? The answer is von Trier’s infamous “Melancholia” press conference.

“The other scandal was the press conference where Lars von Trier made an anti-Semitic joke,” Assayas said. “Everyone got on their high horse. My position was to say that I was not engaged as a morality judge, and that ‘Melancholia’ was magnificent. There were consequences on the record, as he was a serious contender for the [Palme d’Or]. At first, there were only two of us, Jude Law and I, who thought that Terrence Malick’s ‘The Tree of Life’ could also claim the highest prize. The reason other members joined our cause was because they had lost their favorite.”

A bit of a shame since I do believe Melancholia is at least twice the film Tree of Life attempts to be. But that press conference really did send ripples over the news, so I see why Cannes quickly backed out of honouring him.

It’s not like Cannes hasn’t got a reputation for such things, Apocalypse Now was quite literally bribed into the Palm D’Or, with only one judge sticking to their guns with The Tin Drum to earn a draw.

Always preferred Tree of Life to Melancholia, so I would’ve been with Assayas and Law. Still both good movies.

I've never seen Tree of Life but Melancholia was stunning.
