Default Before Midnight (Before Sunrise/Sunset Sequel)

Quote:
Ethan Hawke, Richard Linklater and Julie Delpy to write third ‘Before Sunrise’ film

For those who prefer film trilogies that focus on unrequited romances and stream-of-consciousness dialogue between a French woman and an American author, here’s some good news: There will be a third “Before Sunrise” movie.

In an interview with the French publication Allocine, as noted by Vulture, Ethan Hawke confirmed that he, “Sunrise” co-star Julie Delpy and director Richard Linklater — who were nominated for an Academy Award in 2005 for co-writing the script for “Before Sunset,” the sequel to 1995’s “Before Sunrise” — are planning to write a third film about the uber-contemplative, almost-lovers Jesse (Hawke) and Celine (Delpy).

“All three of us have been having similar feelings that we’re ready to revisit those characters,” Hawke said. “There’s nine years between the first two movies and, if we made the film next summer, it would be nine years again so we’ve really started thinking that would be a good thing to do. We’re going to try write it this year.”

This is not the first time that Hawke has raised the prospect of another “Sunrise.”

In an interview last year with Collider, the actor hinted that a third screenplay was a real possibility. But this is the first time Hawke has definitively indicated there are plans to make it happen soon.

“Before Sunrise” and “Before Sunset” served as cinematic bookends, first tracing the love-at-first-sight-via-Eurorail pass relationship between Jesse and Celine (“Sunrise”), then, in “Sunset,” the regret both felt a decade later about not pursuing that connection. The subject matter of the third film remains vague. Did the two wind up together? Did they separate again, then randomly stumble upon each other in a decidedly quaint European cafe? It’s unclear. What is clear is that Hawke, Delpy and Linklater have proven twice that they know how to create an honest and touching portrait of love the way it feels in real life instead of rom-coms. And if they can manage it again, they will have pulled off what is, in my opinion, one of the great love story hat tricks in movie history.

This is awesome news. Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are two of my all-time favorite romantic dramas. What do you guys think it will be called though?

Good question...

Whatever it will be called, I can't wait. Absolutely love those movies.

Best thing about this news is that a new sequel will most likely prompt the studios to (finally) release Before Sunrise and Before Sunset on Blu-ray.

It will be awesome if they round out the story. The last one we happened to be in Chicago and were lucky enough to see it at an actual theater. When it ended, the entire audience concurrently said "Are you kidding me?" with the ending... it was good but of course left us wanting to know if Celine and Jessie ever ended up together.. this one will hopefully answer that question.

Why? There's absolutely no reason to be "hesitant" if you loved the first two films.

I'd love to see the films released as a Criterion box set.

Really? Where can they take the stroy from here? What made the second so good was there was a reason they were apart, and it was a story of them reconnecting. Is the third going to be about them having issues in their now 10 year relationship? I really have no interest in seeing them reconnecting after a split.

I'd love to catch up with them one more time, but hopefully it is an engaging as the first two. I am excited that they are talking about making one more. Hopefully they will have a good story that will remain faithful to the characters.

I'm really looking forward to this one. Sure, a big aspect of these films are its cliffhangers but what really appealed to me were the character's chemistry and their own personal philosophies and how they developed between the 2 films.

I am more hesitant about Delpy's own "2 Days in New York" than this one, though.

Who knows where they take the story... but seeing how you don't really know either, that pretty much tells me there;s plenty of options to explore.

To dismiss a sequel when you acknowledge the greatness of the previous 2 entries is unfairly judging the film before you even know anything about it. And its indie films like this that need our support, not condemnation.

This next one might be called "Before Jeopardy" if they don't write fast enough.

I really enjoyed both movies and have them on DVD. I also like how the second movie ended and I kind of think it's the best way to end it. I won't mind a third movie but I wish they would leave it like it is now, let each of us come with his own reason if they are or not together.

These truly are exceptional films. Most people try to creat a new romantic film every year that's hailed as the one true way life really is and how romance is perceived. In my eyes, both these films nailed it from every direction and then some. I love both movies and can not wait for a third.

Now you and Richard Linklater have something in the works right?

Linklater and I have been working on a film called “The 12-Year Project,” which will have a proper title someday. We make a short film once a year, and it follows the life of a little boy from first grade to twelfth grade. And so the movie is a series of vignettes. I play his father; just little moments of childhood and stuff. What the movie’s largely really about is time.

We’re also doing a follow-up to “Before Sunrise” and “Before Sunset,” so that will be fun. We’re going to shoot that this summer.

Where will this one take place?

I’ve gotten into trouble, so I’m sworn to secrecy. The biggest change between this one and the last one is the Internet. The first time we did it, we didn’t have any pressure; nobody gave a shit.

I love both of the films and look forward to finding out where they go with the story. Like a previous poster stated at least the film will push the first two to BD.

Doubt it would happen but would love for a theater to do a marathon of all three films when the new one is released.

I wonder where this one will take place.

Will Jar Jar die?

Will Bingo, I mean Frodo, destroy the Ring?

Will they find awkward love in each others's arms? Or will they forever just keep finding ways to regret their missed opportunities, to forever wonder what could have been if they had acted upon the emotional intrigue that arose from the casual glances exchanged upon the rail to Naboo, or the meeting in the humble cafe perched upon the lip of Mount Doom?

Or am I getting my trilogies confused?
