When was the last time all the movies that premiered in a weekend were critical darlings? Well, it's happening this week. Incredibly, there were 7 films that opened this weekend with a cumulative average of 90% at rotten tomatoes:
This has got to be some kind of all-time record. So which great film goes on to win the weekend by a landslide? Well, according to Wednesday night's tallies... it's Twilight at #1 of course! And Happy Feat Two at the #3 spot. The average Rotten Tomatoes rating for those two films is 35%. They'll make more money this weekend than all the critically acclaimed new releases combined... in spite of the fact that these two drecks already had their premieres a week ago. Don't ever blame the studios for making crap films ever again. It's the movie going public that's to blame for the kinds of films that are being made. They're the ones that are voting with their wallets, and it's pretty clear what they want to see every week. Bare-chested metrosexual vampires and franchise sequels are what they want to see. Explosions, comic book super heroes, fast cars, and gross out comedies. |

Four of those are very limited release films, so they won't even stand a chance until expansion.
The Muppets: Should be a hit and will appeal to younger and older audiences. Arthur Christmas: It's hard to say. Aardman usually doesn't have big grosses but there really isn't much out for Christmas movies. Hugo: If it wasn't for 1200 theater count, this movie would have better success, but despite being my favorite movie of 2011, this is a very hard sell. Much smarter than the average family film. Breaking Dawn Part 1 owns this weekend no doubt, but next week I'm pulling for a Muppets upset with no new wide releases until 12/9 |

Even with only a 1200-theater count... Hugo's per-theater box office tally is very mediocre. That's especially rough when you consider that a limited release ought to have a high per-theater average. Instead, Hugo is filling its limited theaters at about half the rate of Muppets or Twillight. |

The studios are idiots for releasing all these films on the same day. Hugo, which might be the best of all the films, is not going to do well. It won't do well because it won't attract teens, who will go to the Vampire movie and it won't attract families with very young kids, who will go to the Muppets.
But it would have done well if it had been released in a window which didn't have any other new kids movies being released. It's too bad because it looks like it's an amazingly beautiful movie. I bet it does very well internationally. I also think that it's a mistake to release Dragon Tattoo during Xmas week. It's most certainly not a holiday movie and it's also not a movie that's going to attract teens and 20-somethings, in spite of the popularity of the books. I would have held it off until February, perhaps around the President's Day break. |

I want to see Breaking Dawn, but on that list up there, Hugo and My Week With Marilyn are the ones that have my interest piqued. I don't know if I'll get Marilyn where I am though since it is limited release. Hugo is at my local Regal so I'll try to see Breaking Dawn and Hugo next week since they both play there.
