Hugo 3D Blu-ray Review

Release Date : Feb 28th 2012

Just got back after watching this in 3D. In my opinion, this is simply the best 3D experience I have ever had in a theatre. What did you guys think ?

I'm really looking forward to it but I will most probably wait til the Blu. March isn't far away and I got plenty to watch in the meantime. Still though I've heard nothing but praise for the 3D in it so I'm anxious to see it for myself but in general I enjoy a 3D movie at home more then I do in a theater.

Just came back from the film as well. Definitely the best use of 3D to tell a story(documentaries don't count, and Transformers 3 had no story) since Avatar. The film was beautiful and quite sincere. As a film lover, the film really hit me on a personal level.
The 3D was never gimmicky and always natural. There's lots of fun shots where the depth is used well or objects are left in the foreground, but people never try to stab you in the eye with a corn-on-the-cob.
It's also a beautiful film by itself, and that's saying something since the majority of 3D films are awful sequels or mindless popcorn movies.

I really can't wait to see this at home. My theaters' 3D had some ghosting, but I know I would t see that at home(I have a DLP) and I think Scorsese was conscious of how people can now watch 3D at home. Many shots from scenes I refuse to spoil, feature a sort of "diorama" like presentation whichll look amazing on a tv.

Easily one of my favorite films this year, and one I'd actually see with the entire family(Drive and Tree of Life arent really what I'd show to children)

BTW Did you guys catch the Titanic trailer in 3D? It looks phenomenal, the conversion is certainly the best I've ever seen. It really looks like it could have been shot with a 3D camera! Cant wait to see that.

Thanks for the heads up everyone! Was hoping to wait until this weekend to watch it; just decided I'm going to a matinee this afternoon at 1:30 pm. Can't wait! And a Happy Thanksgiving!

I saw this film at a free screening on Monday and it was great! This is a must own title for me.

BTW no Titanic trailer at my theater probably because it was a free screening...

Wow! You guys are right. The 3D effects of this film is truly remarkable. Definitely facilitated in the storytelling and enjoyment of the film. Magical is the best word I can come up with to describe this movie. Quite surprising film coming from Scorsese. I'll be watching it again soon!

I was skeptic about how Titanic would look in 3D and when I saw the trailer today, it blew me away! I can't believe how good it looked. I may be checking this out at the theaters next year after all.

Also saw the trailer for the Star Wars Episode 1 coming out in 3D next year as well. Not as stunning as the Titanic trailer in the 3D effects but looked great as well.

For me, people who refers "gimmick" to "3d" loses credibility.

Well, as a believer in 3D as an actual artistic tool, I need a word to refer to when 3D is used to shoot snot out at children or direct Justin Bieber's hair flip in the faces of teenage girls. It's to differentiate those uses of 3D from its use in Avatar and Hugo, which use 3D artistically to enhance its story and send a message that 3D can do much more.

I have no clue as to what this movie is even supposed to be about, or even what kind of movie it is. Shit, I don't even know if it's animation or live action lol.

Planning to check it out this Monday or Tuesday though. Not been to a movie in a while and looking forward to seeing something really enjoyable. Hope I like it as much others here do.

If you love films you'll be in for a surprise. I knew very little, only that it was directed by Martin Scorsese, was in 3D, and was based on a children's book. The 3D is fantastic, it has a great ensemble cast, and it's got a sincere and moving story.

Wow! Everyones who's seen this seems to love it! I don't know if I have the time to catch it in theaters (or when it's out in Australia), but it sounds like a definate pick-up on blu! I'll try to find out as little about it between now and then, and just sit back and enjoy (did this for Super 8 most recently... excellent!).
First Scorsese film in seven years without Leo. Now lets have some Burton without the Depp...

I found it odd there were so many window violations - sometimes the entire scene would be "in front of" the screen. A little more alignment might have helped. But the use of 3D was fantastic. It even had a very nice selection of (intentional) "pop" scenes without feeling gimmicky.

The less you know about it, the better. You'll be in for a surprise! I actually started reading the book it's based on weeks ago, but only read the first couple of chapters, so I didn't know where the story was headed and I'm glad I didn't finish it because watching Hugo allowed me to take a journey with him to an amazing discovery!

Default Hugo was a great movie

After sitting though about 8 "3-D" movie trailers, most of which were fake post production crap, Hugo started and delivered the goods. Beautiful, poignant story-telling and wondrous use of true 3D. Not since Avatar have I seen 3D used so well.

I'm confused by your comment. What trailers, out of these 8, were post-converted?

I only remember one, Titanic, and it looked almost like it was natively shot in 3D.
