Default John Wayne - A Legacy

Slowly but surely John Wayne's movies are being added to Blu-Ray. Of the remaining movies so far not released to Blu-Ray the following are on my wish list and I was wondering just how much interest is really out there.

Still waiting for:

The Shootist (1976)
Rooster Cogburn (1975)
The Train Robbers (1973)
Chisum (1970)
The Undefeated (1969)
The War Wagon (1967)
El Dorado (1966)
In Harm's Way (1965)
The Sons of Katie Elder (1965)
McLintock! (1963)
Hatari! (1962)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)
The Alamo (1960)
North to Alaska (1960)
The High and the Mighty (1954)
Hondo (1953)
The Quiet Man (1952)
Rio Grande (1950)
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949)
3 Godfathers (1948)
Fort Apache (1948)
Red River (1948)

I saw a few of John Wayne's movies and I have to wonder. Why was he so famous? His movies sucked, at least the ones that I saw. Yes I do admit that I saw some of his worst films, but I also saw some of his critically acclaimed movies as well.

Worst:
The Conquerer; bad idea, Wayne as a Mongolian?
The Green Beret; very bad idea, Vietnam looked more like South Carolina

Critically Aclaimed:
The Longest Day;Yes he wasn't in it much, but the scenes where he was in ruined it for me.
True Grit; As with any western, it was dated (in this case looked liked people in the 60's dressed up, but didnt care to make the old west look authentic.)

I have to admit, I don't get it. Why was he so popular?
But, like everything else, He deserves BluRay coverage.

I'm not going to disagree that you don't get it. Wayne is one of the greatest screen actors of all time.

I'll buy the following when they're released

Red River
Liberty Valance
Hondo
3 Godfathers
They Were Expendable
North to Alaska
Yellow Ribbon
El Dorado
The Quiet Man

I would purchase all of them !! I would also love to have some of John Waynes WWII Films like :

Sands of Iwo Jima
The Flying Tigers
Flying Leathernecks

The Sons of Katie Elder is a personal favorite of mine. The scene about the glass eye makes me laugh everytime.

I have heard rumor for sometime now, that the Alamo is being/has been restored. Perhaps in 2012.

can't believe you don't have The Big Trail on there--great film.
and it's being released on bd in France in February!
https://forum.blu-ray.com/france/188...ohn-wayne.html
also: Legend of the Lost--a pretty bad one--is coming to Germany in a few weeks I believe.
as far as The Alamo being released--forget it. the bankruptcy of MGM killed the restoration before it even really got started back in 2006 or so. It was supposed to be released last year, but the entire project has been dead ever since MGM's problems ended funding.
RAH stated that the only significant work that occurred was done on the audio.
It would be wonderful to find out that work is going to begin again now that MGM's financial situation has been resolved, but I'm not holding my breath.
The Alamo might get released on bd eventually, but it won't be a bd based on any type of the needed restoration imo.

You wouldn't believe it. I was just thinking the same thing last week when My Fair Lady came out on Blu-Ray which utilized RAH's significant restoration work. I was beginning to wonder whatever happened on his restoration project on The Alamo. Hope it has a chance to be completed now that interest in catalogue Blu-Ray releases is gathering momentum.
