Default Prices of DVDs must come down if we are to buy into this

I do not have a problem with copyright protection, and I understand that the studios lose a bunch of money because of illegal copying, but if they want us to buy into a new technology and spend more money on equipment, the prices of DVDs must come down. I don't care if the packaging gets slimmer, it is a waste of material in most cases anyway.

We are buying the movie, not the package; unlike food and other manufacturers who believe (and rightly so) that package fluff sells more product.

Back to the subject of money, I don't want to have to spend $20 on a new movie, at Walmart no less! Movies a year or two ago were $16 at most, but recently the prices have started to climb, especially for new releases. It costs less than $2 to make the DVD, case, and wrapper. It costs less than $1 to ship and stock it.

These prices have gone up and for no good reason EXCEPT because the studios feel they have to make up for lost profit on illegal copying. All I can say is that I will not pay $20 for movies if I have to buy new equipment, and if the studios want to make up for lost revenue, don't charge the people who don't copy illegally!

I think he means with DVDs = movies.

I think he says: I'd buy BD equiment if BD movies itself become cheaper.
The movie companies 'want' you to buy new equipment <- costly, therefor he wants the prices of BDs to come down.

Isn't it? In that case, "Yes!"

If it isn't, (only DVDs would become cheaper) BD would have a harder time dominating the market... DVD would be even stronger in position.

To get the movies I love on BD I'd be willing to pay $40 each easily. However, they'll have to be priced a lot less if I'm going to buy other movies as well. For instance, I'd probably buy 50-75 movies I love on BD but if they were priced more in line with current DVD prices I'd likely buy hundreds of movies.

Sure... eventually. A good friend of mine has well over 3000 DVDs with several hundred yet unwatched. When I bought DVDs I had around 900 or so. I had a lot of discs that I never watched a second time so I plan on being more careful this time around. I doubt I'll end up with more than 500 BDs. It's not like Hollywood has been making a lot of "great" movies lately anyway. :P

Default $25 a perfect price point for BD?

I think $15 for a DVD is the perfect price point for a current standard DVD movie. I rarely ever spend more than that for a DVD movie, this includes new releases and 2-disc sets. I think $25.00 for a BD is a perfect price point only if
1. the original motion picture soundtrack is included
2. the material is encoded at 420p (for backwards compatibilty with current DVD players)
3. the material is encoded at 720p and 1080p
4. the movie soundtrack is encoded in 5.1 Dolby Digital and 6.1 DTS-ES Plus.

Oh, and by the way...the consumer has the burden to buy all new equipment (receiver and the actual BD player) to process all this.

That is one of the many reasons why the launch of DVD-A and SACD got screwed up by the music companies and still suffers today. They wanted $25 for a music disc. I don't think so.

Do you agree or disagree?

I agree with you 100% on the SACD/DVD-A issue. Many of those discs are extremely overpriced. As for your idea of a $25 BD... keep dreaming. At least in the beginning you're not going to get the soundtrack included for that price nor are you going to get three different resolutions of the film. My hope is for all BD movies to use 1080p while all BD players should scale it down to 1080i or 480p. That's the best we can hope for IMO.

He does try to watch all of his DVDs but he buys them faster than he can. Between his job and his kids it's a wonder he's watched as many as he has. Everyone tells him to cut back on his DVD purchases but alas he's insanely addicted to blowing all of his extra dough on them.

I wrote this in another thread

http://homemediaretailing.com/news/h...rticle_ID=7897

Quote:
Current DVDs cost about 80 cents to produce, including packaging. Blu-ray discs are expected to cost just under $2 per disc — significantly higher than the 50-cent-per-disc surcharge supporters have been claiming, but a cost likely to come down to about $1 in time, after replication facilities have been retooled to produce the new discs, which have a proprietary 0.1 millimeter cover layer.

yes erdega79, but I don't think these manufacturers actually sell the discs for the costs they produce it
the cost of the disc is maybe just a 10% of the total cost
you can see that very good when buying a retail DVD movie :?

of course, I was talking about the media cost only. The prices set by studios are at their own disgression. Bottom line blu ray will be moderatelly pricy in the beginning but should become affordable not that far off.

this may be a dumb question but say a movie came out in 1980 and blu ray wants to release it how do they get it up to 1080i quality. Were movies originally recorded this good or do they have to enhance it somehow

Film naturally has a very high resolution so older films will also benefit from HD definition.

Hope this helps.

Even some films from as far back as the 30's are of higher quality than HD can provide. Rest assured, there's no reason why the vast majority of films made can't look superb on a BD.
