Default New Year's Eve

It seems no one else wanted to start this one, so I'll do it. This thread is to discuss and eventually review the upcoming Garry Marshall directed ensemble holiday comedy, New Year's Eve. Set for release 12/09/2011.

Okay. Just saw this today. My score - 10/10

This is just a fun, overall lighthearted, and gentle good time at the movies. I loved it. I have a feeling that this is going to be a New Year's traditional movie for me. Yes, I am a sentimental fool I guess. Oh well. Michelle Pfeiffer and Zac Efron are awesome together. The whole cast is just infectiously upbeat. I LOVE NEW YEAR'S EVE!!!

Definitely will see this. Looks awesome and has a lot of cast members i like. The only disappointment is Ashton Kutcher. So i will have to try stomach my way through his scenes.

He's not that bad, and it helps that he shares his scenes with Lea Michele. I forgot to mention Lea's killer rendition of Auld Lang Syne, it's simply gorgeous and moving. You just have to be in the right frame of mind about this film. There are some sad moments too, but they are very well balanced with everything else. When and if you go, I hope you enjoy yourself.

Just to get a taste of the Heavenly beauty that is Lea Michele's rendition of Auld Lang Syne, here is a little Christmas to New Year's treat for everyone.

It was average for me. I didn't really laugh much. But I loved the cast.

I also loved the Valentine's Day cameo at the end. LOL But you'll have to see the movie to know what I'm talking about.

That was just too weird. At least Marshall isn't afraid to poke at himself. I loved the movie. It really might become an annual New Year's tradition.

Thank God I'm single otherwise I'd probably shoot myself in the face. I'm not really a romantic comedy kind of guy with a few exceptions (Love Actually, first Bridget Jones, As Good As It Gets, Cameron Crowe) and this just looks fluffy that I'd probably watch a Sunday afternoon with the flu.

Hey dude, I'm single as well. I feel no urge to shoot myself in the face over this movie. It is fluffy and airy, but you know what? That's just what I needed today. And, it is fun, fun, fun. I noticed Pride & Prejudice (the Keira Knightley version) isn't on your list. Have you not seen it or did you hate it? That was a beautifully made romantic comedy with a touch of old fashioned class to boot. New Year's Eve is light and frothy feel good fun when it's needed most. I say wait for Blu and you can rent it. I am a single guy who loves romance probably for the fact that I have yet to experience it. I know it never works like it does in the movies, but that's what makes them fun for me.

My mom bought the DVD when it was first released years ago and yeah, it looked great, but there was something about the sound mix that made the dialogue sound like they were mumbling their lines and I couldn't understand what they were saying.

I think the heavy accents also make understanding the dialogue a tad bit difficult. The worst, I believe, was during the ball sequence near the beginning. The surrounding noise was so loud you could barely make out what Keira was saying to that other woman when they overheard Darcy dissing their town and them as well. I haven't watched my Blu all the way through yet, but I will try to find time some day. During quieter scenes you could hear perfectly, but other times they did whisper in or talk in hushed tones, and that coupled with the heavy accents presented a challenge for understanding.

Saw the film this afternoon. It was a mixed bag for me. Not as enjoyable as Valentine's Day. Loved the pairing of Pfeiffer and Efron the best-- just because it's unexpected-- but way too many other storylines going on that I wasn't as emotionally invested and the pairings not as inspired but it was great to see many cameos apart from what the trailers showed (I love Carla Gugino and Alyssa Milano). Also, surprised there was no gay pairing this outing like the Eric Dane-Bradley Cooper surprise in Valentine's Day. I was hoping it will be Sofia Vergara and Halle Berry. Overall, a passable entertainment just for the celebrity factor but I doubt it will become a holiday classic (I probably would have enjoyed watching The Descendants and Young Adult more-- they weren't showing those movies at this multiplex). My rating: 3/5

And once again....the Curse of Week 50 at the box office:
NYE opens as the #1 movie, at $13M, in "one of the worst weekend openings of the year", and Twilight, Muppets, etc., behind it.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but:
The Golden Compass...
The Princess & the Frog....
Voyage of the Dawn Treader...

I'm a voice in the wilderness trying to warn them every year: The movie that opens two weeks before Christmas will disappear without a trace, even at #1.
It's the worst moviegoing weekend of the entire year--right after we've finished catching up with the Thanksgiving movies, right before we're waiting for the Christmas Day movies, and right when we're worried the shopping malls are too crowded to go near--and every year, somebody tries to make it look like it's the MOVIE'S fault.
Well, do you believe me now??? Or does one more movie have to suffer next year?

(Oh, well, at least it was the throwaway chick-flick and the stoner comedy....Maybe the studios are finally catching on and keeping it empty.)

They can release Breaking Dawn part 2 this time next year and it'll still open huge.

I guess they should just close all of the movie theaters for the 50th weekend.

I still think it is the movie's fault. If there is nothing that is captivating or motivating to see, why should I spend my money on it?

All the movies you listed have no real appeal to anyone without a family. I'm a single guy, why would I go see any of those movies?

This week's release were: New Year's Eve and The Sitter.

Again, where is my motivation to see a chick flick unless I was going with a female and another comedy with Johan Hill. Doesn't exactly make me flock to the theaters.

Now up coming in Sherlock Holmes, Tin Tin and Missions Impossible Four, I would be willing to see. If any of those open this week, it would have done well.

It is merely a coincidence and the lack of wide appealing movies that have opened on the 50th week.

Why would anyone pay to see a movie with a 6% positive rating?

Critics aren't always right but when 94% of them say something sucks why spend your hard earned money to see something.

I thought this would have done nearly $30 million for the opening weekend. This is the kind of film where reviews don't matter. People want to see the film because their favorite star is included in it.

I guess the reason Valentine's Day was a huge success was because it was released 2 days before Valentine's Day and a bunch of couples/etc. went.

I watched it, and enjoyed it thoroughly. Critics are calling it "sentimental", "sappy" and other such terms. I guess that makes me a sappy sentimental fool. So be it. This is one of those films like the Twilight series. It is really critic-proof. Those who like such films, like me, will like it. And I loved New Year's Eve. I may go see it again on New Year's Eve just for the heck of it. And I think it's safe to say, judging from the reactions I heard from the others in the theater with me (which wasn't that many, but hey), I am not the only one to like this movie.
