Good to see that ITV are at last releasing blu-rays again. Hopefully will see lots more from them from the Rank library.

12th March is a strange choice for the release date. I would have thought they would wait another month when it will be the 100th anniversary of the event. I suppose they are trying to steal a march on the Blu release of that Cameron movie, although they aren't really in competition with it.
In any case, I will treat this with caution until I can see a review. ITV haven't exactly covered themselves with glory with their past Blu-ray releases. |

I would doubt ITV would enhance the sound from the original dolby mono track but I would hope for a remastered 1.85:1 picture (and not just an upscale) plus all the bonus content from the UK DVD otherwise I may as well stick with the double sided DVD Rank put out 10 years ago.
This was such a good made film for its time (back in 1958), just a shame the archive footage at the start is clearly not the Titanic or her sister ship the Olympic but may have been of the Lucitannia. Last edited by Mick B; 12-14-2011 at 02:55 PM. |

Criterion is the distributor state side in March.
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=7905 I may import as it'll probably be a better transfer. |

Hmm this is interesting as ITV own the rights I think to the early David Lean's too, and as Criterion are also releasing the David Lean directs Noel Coward collection, could we be getting those too? (albeit we already have Brief Encounter)

My thought: Criterion's release isn't always the better version (for instance, the MoC release of M has a better transfer than the Criterion), so I'm tempted to wait for the comparison reviews. But I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts. ![]() |

Fair enough. Thanks for the reply!
![]() If the UK release had had some kind of special packaging that was likely to go out OOP fairly quickly - a period-looking steelbook, maybe, or even a digipack - then I might have rushed to grab it. But it doesn't even appear to have a slipcase, so I'll probably wait now and compare the quality and contents between the two versions. |
