I too have sent and e-mail. Probably send another one from my girls e-mail/computer. And then some more from other various e-mail accounts/computers. I don't know if it will make a difference, but it's kinda fun.

How long did the Divx debacle take to end anyway?

In light of this overwhelming covert support by industry insiders, how long do you think the Universal debacle would end?

Divx was just over a year I believe. And just about EVERYONE hated the format, from industry folks to the poor salesmen at Circuit City who would tell their customers not to buy it.

However one difference is the overwhelming support for BD, in terms of sales to the public, in such a short time. Spin the numbers ("well that's just because it's in the PS3") all you want, but stand alone players are now outselling HD-DVD too. All told, the user base for BD is huge right now, and even DVD took a long time to get to these numbers.

Based on that, Universal should be on board before they say their prayers and go to bed tonight. But for some, stubborn reason, they will hold out until the bitter, bitter end, about six months from now as most people are projecting.

Bill is awesome. He always said from the beginning that he would give both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray a fair shake. He was very critical of BOTH formats when they first launched and said what needed to be said, i.e. players were slow, glitchy, etc. He is very influential, and I'm glad he's essentially said "enough is enough" for the good of everyone.

This has inspired me to send Universal an email as well. It won't do any good. But I'm sending it anyway.

Also sent an email, but I'm pretty sure Universal already knows they're ignoring the money here.

Bill Hunt is right about the eventual winner but wrong in one important respect. He says that if Universal adopted Total HD that would be the end of it.

Really? I don't know how representative the poll on this site is about the feelings that BD owners have to THD, but I think it would be fair to say it's not an enthusiastic endorsement.

THD is STUPID plain and simple. It prolongs the war by continuing to confuse the wider public. As long as people are not sure which is the right HD format to buy then they won't buy.

The Aussie retailer did the right thing. If the idiots at the 'neutral' studios can't decide then retailers will decide for you.

If THD ever does appear then by that time Blu-ray could well be outselling HD DVD by 10:1 globally making the HD mutant format look like nothing more than a desperate attempt to keep HD DVD on life support. But for what purpose? Be kind. Put it out of its misery now!

While I agree that TotalHD is stupid, for Universal to adopt it as its peace offering will be a format-war-checkmate move.

The reason is simple. Finally BD supporters can get Universal movies. By securing that, HD-DVD no longer has any exclusives while BD maintains its 3 exclusives. So when BD moves from early adopter phase to general public phase (it's so hard to differentiate with the PS3 factor), no salesman in their right mind would tell you to get HD-DVD. Instead, they'd tell you to get into BD. Hence HD-DVD while still supported by its studios die a slow suffocating death.

Of course if Universal just dumps HD-DVD, that's even better.

Bonez a good point in another thread:

We all focus on Universal, but imagine if say...Paramount decides to dump HD-DVD in a few months, or something like that?

Suddenly all the rest of this becomes moot and the choice is essentially "taken out of Universal's hands" anyways.

I think even the staunchest of HD-DVD supporters would have to agree on this: HD-DVD literally cannot afford to lose anyone or anything else.

I've seen some talk like that here and abroad. There seems to be this slowly growing idea that Paramount might consider a move like this at some point.

I've been thinking that Paramount is thinking about going BD exclusive... I'm sure by now, MI:3 has hold more copies on BD than on HD-DVD. They have to be watching the sales of HD optical media real closely and be ready to make an attempt at where they are going to hedge their bets. I know that Babel is encoded in AVC... and the BD is encoded in MPEG-2, but maybe they and Sony had a deal on how many titles they (Sony) would encode for them. Paramount could be trying out AVC because they know the BD camp is very fond of the codec and they could be ready to make a move.

This would certainly make an impact on the format war. There are so many MS-DVD supporters that seem like they are on the edge and one more piece of bad news could be all that's needed for them to rescind their support for the format.

I would like to comment too that if Warner Bros can have a look at sales rate of the Departed against HD-DVD version they will be surprised at the end of this month and conclude average sales of BD Departed was far more better than HD-dvd version. As a result ,BD is better than HD-DVD so we should dropped and Go BD.What if Batman Begins is released now with PCM soundtrack and AVC.What it is going to be the result?
And Maybe BD Departed it will be a positive sign that warner should forward with the catch up plan of BD promise us to release as soon as possible
