New member, second thread.
I need some help from some old pros. What are the pros and cons with LCD and Rear Projection? Which did/would you choose? As far as placement goes, I am not at all caught up in hanging it on the wall. It will be going in a room where sunlight will not hit the screen (windows behind the set), wide viewing angles are not a concern (looking out for #1), and I will be using it mostly for 1) BD viewing 2) PS3 gaming and 3)sports in HD. Please help! I appreciate all advice! |

LCD
Pro: 1) You can get a 32" for cheap these days. 2) They are thin. 3) It's plug 'n play. Cons: 1) If you want anything bigger than 40", be prepared to pay. 2) A change is blowing in the wind... and so would your LCD if you put it in a windy area. Keep the cats and dogs away from toppling it over. 3) Older models do not play nicely when you plug in to the RGB port. This is irrelevant if you're not using it as part of your HTPC. Rear Projection Pro: 1) The smallest size starts at 50". For about the same amount for a 46" 1080p, you can get a 50" or bigger. 2) The new models are thinNER than the old ones. Cons: 1) The number of manufacturers that are making them are shrinking. JVC is the only one that still makes them using their D-ILA chips. 2) They may be heavier than a typical LCD size. Well bigger screen, the heavier it is as the same optical system is involved whether you get a 50" or a 60". Don't buy single-chip DLP rear projection! fuad |

I just recently purchaced a Sony Kdf-46e3000 LCD rear projection TV and the picture quality is outstanding. I originally went to the store to get the 46" Sharp Aquos LCD, but when I saw the Projection TV for half the price I couldn't pass it up. My rear projection TV is 1080p and Blurays look amazing played on the playstation. So the largest pro for me with the projection was the price. The Con of the projection TV is that it is not as bright as the LCD but my living room isn't very bright so it doesn't affect the picture. Hope that helps.

The above info is excellent.
RPTV gives you size cheap. Go with the JVC D-ILA or Sony SXRD. Both use the LCos technology, and the new models are much thinner, especially the JVC (11"!) We have the JVC in our home theater, and our son plays the PS3 games all the time. It also does very well with Blu-ray. |
