Beware because you have to add a CC when you go to redeem the 1 month. Is Sony really stupid? They think people are going to put their CC on the PSN that easily after what happened with the PSN breach? I will never add my CC# on the PSN again (the same applies with XBL even though XBL has never been breached/hacked).

British console users have had an average £100 taken from their accounts but some customers have lost more than £200, it was claimed.

It remains unclear how many customers have been affected or how much money was stolen by the online gangs behind the "phishing" attacks.

But The Sun claimed that “thousands” of customers of the popular entertainment console were hit in 35 countries. Criminals were said to have made “millions of pounds” by tricking customers into disclosing personal vital information.

On Tuesday, executives from Microsoft, which operates Xbox Live, were investigating the cyber thefts, the newspaper reported.

The "phishing" gangs were thought to have stolen small amounts of money from credit cards over several weeks, which made it harder to detect the fraud.

As part of their scam, the gangs sent emails to players directing them to fake websites offering free Microsoft points that can be used to buy games.

Duped victims then entered their personal details, which allowed criminals access to their accounts and valuable credit card information.

They also reportedly befriend players online and convince them into volunteering personal details.

Paul Thompson, 29, of Essex, had £84 stolen from his account. "People need to know this is happening,” he told the newspaper.

The Sun said Xbox staff were working to protect users from more attacks. Company owner Microsoft has reportedly offered refunds to users who prove they did not give passwords away. It also warned customers to change their passwords.

Xbox is the latest video games firm to be targeted by hackers this year.

Valve, the firm behind Steam, a distribution network for major PC titles including Call of Duty and Skyrim, was hit earlier this month.

Codemasters suffered a security breach in June, and Sony was forced to shut down the PlayStation network for almost three weeks in April and May after the personal details of more than 70 million users were illegally accessed.

A Microsoft spokesman was unavailable for comment on Tuesday.

I got a code and 3 codes to give to friends.

Remember even though PSN was brought offline by hackers, sensitive information was never compromised.

I got the email with the free month PS+ codes as well. If you have to enter credit card information just to redeem them, I guess I have 3 useless codes here...

Well... aren't you just superior than the rest of us?

I've ALWAYS had my CC info on PSN. I haven't experienced any problems. Nor will I. It was already said that the hackers couldn't get access to vital info without the user volunteering information. So, get off your high horse buddy, drink some lemonade instead of the kool-aid, and don't down talk others who didn't buy into the fear mongering.

If you really feel that way about CC information and hacking, you might as well never look to use any online purchasing options with ANY form of payment since EVERY SERVER ON THE PLANET is technically vulnerable. Interac and CC and Paypal, etc are all just as easily a target as PSN was.

With that being said, I'll take a code from someone. PM me? Thanks.

The only reason I changed my password is because I was made to. The only reason I changed my CC info is because that card was replaced by another one with different details. And I only did that yesterday when I bought my 3rd PS3

Had no issues of any kind since PSN was hacked and never believed I would. If it did happen then I would have dealt with the situation, but I refuse to live in fear that something might happen!

The only reason that Sony's situation got so much press was because of the childish console war mentality. All it would take is 1 Xbot to write a decent article about the news to spark widespread panic amidst the masses, which would ignite all other media outlets so they could try to get a slice of the attention pie while it lasts. And that is exactly what happened.

It was never as bad, nor as clear cut, as "Anyone with CC info on the PSN will have their identity stolen." The information was still safe so long as a password change was made, which was forced on us anyways.

right back at ya.

The hackers claimed that they had access to the accounts but didn't want to harm the users. *rolls eyes* they just wanted to teach Sony a lesson or something kind of BS.

No but this was

http://pcworld.co.nz/pcworld/pcw.nsf...acked-accounts

And in June Lulsec reported having distributed thousands of Live login infos, which MS of course denied.

This being said, in the case of this thread, the UK example with thousands of pounds stolen is gold, as it is about Phishing and the dangers of giving -anything- following a simple email with a link to click there.

Now let's all thank Wingman for yet another attempt to degenerate the thread into a PS3 vs 360 flamewar...
