Default Fox News Report

I was watching the Fox Morning News this morning and they had a story that the Hi Defination war is over. This was due to the decision made by Warner Home Video to support Blu Ray exclusively.

They showed some clips of Underworld Evolution and some retail clips showing customers buying blu ray discs. They showed store shelfs/sections with blu only and showed a stand alone player in a different shot. They closed the story by saying that after the Warner annoucement, blu player sales went to a 9 to 1 ratio.

Good Press for us! It was only about a minute long, but nice to see!

Thumbs up

People see and read stuff like this and there is no way they will chose HD-DVD. Lots of people that have been refusing to get into HD until the war was over will be getting Blu in the coming weeks.

That's great to hear. It is good advertising for blu and it was free.

The positive media attention and free advertisement alone will continue to push Blu over the top

Haha...of course they are owned by the same umbrella corporation as 20th Century Fox (News Corporation) which makes them about as fair and balanced as usual, but it's good for Blu-ray, so that makes me happy!

Toshiba: We still believe HDDVD is the right choice, starting today we will be offering 20 movies and the HDDVD player A3 for free, all you have to do is come to the store and get it.

I think they should use the cupholder commercial on Youtube for the superbowl.

Or the closet full of obsolete hardware works too.

The news is unfolding the same way the sun set on betamax. But there was no internet back then, so we don't really get to see the same public angst live for the betamax owners as we are now seeing everyday with a few diehard hd dvd owners.

But the scope for betamax was much wider even if we didn't see it, as millions of betamax boxes were sold every year in the early 80s, and a lot more people got hurt by that format war. We can be glad that due to WB's humane choice, this saga is drawing to a close with a lot less damage to the normal public.

Although toshiba trying to sell off a lot of players for clearance prices can get new buyers in, because the prices are low enough, the new buyers have little to complain about since they're not paying that much and they can still be used as upscaling players until they buy a BD player some point in the future.

But the main reason this is not a big deal is that after the clearance sales prices are out, according to NPD, only about 8000 hd dvd players were sold in the week of Jan19th. BD players still outsold the cheaper HD DVD players by 2:1 in spite of the large price disparity.

In dollar terms, the BD players also outsold HD DVD players by 6:1 since the average BD player sold in that week was priced almost 3x the clearance sale prices of hd dvd players.

For HD DVD, this is an anomaly. The pattern in the past of price cuts was that they took commanding leads for a few weeks after the price cut, and then start to lose sales to BD players when the BD players reduce their prices as well. The BD players did not have to cut as deep to outsell hd dvd players since it appears a 2x price difference typically meant parity in unit sales for both formats.

This is the first time we've seen hd dvd priced 1/3 of BD players and still being outsold by 2:1. The most predictable move is that Toshiba will likely reduce their MSRP further --- street clearance prices are already at $100.04, so I suspect Toshiba will try $99 or even $79 very soon.

They ran a story yesterday about how overblown that was and inviting Bioware on to discuss it.
