Default Rifftrax Live!: Plan 9 from Outer Space

For any Rifftrax fans out there (or MST3K fans), they just released their first Live show from 2009 (Plan 9 from Outer Space) on blu-ray. I got my copy in the mail today. As far as I can tell, it's only available on their website at the moment. Amazon doesn't have a listing for it*, nor does this site for that matter**. It has the same content as the DVD release did, but it's in glorious high definition now!

I also saw that they plan to release the Live Christmas Shorts show on blu-ray as well, on 1/24/12. Obviously they missed the ideal release date for that one.

*Update: Amazon has a listing for it now, but it's still unavailable. It's a "sign up to be notified" page.

**Update 2: And now it does.

Holy crap, that's awesome that Plan 9 is now on Blu-ray. I can't wait to get this.

Does anybody know how to get this release added to the site? I see that they just added a page for the Rifftrax Live Christmas show BD, but still no Plan 9. I'd like to add it to my collection.

Kind of ironic that the real MST3K maintained they'd never riff Plan 9, it was too corny and overexposed.
(The series was originally afraid of doing Robot Monster from cheap cult overexposure either, but that one just had its own riches to find.)

While true, there's a reason that Rifftrax took on Plan 9 that traces back to the start of the project. Mike Nelson landed a job with Legend Films, who were taking popular public domain movies, remastering them, and colorizing them for DVD release. As an added incentive to buy their versions of these public domain films, they had Nelson record humorous commentary tracks for a few of their releases. Plan 9 was one of them, along with Night of the Living Dead, Reefer Madness, Carnival of Souls, and a few others. These commentary tracks eventually developed into Rifftrax.

When they started doing the Rifftrax Live shows, they could only use public domain movies. So they've been using the remastered Legend Films catalog. Hence, this release, Plan 9 from Outer Space. And it's hilarious.

Another thing to keep in mind is that, when they were on cable, the channels were giving them access to their libraries of movies. But when working for Legend Films, they only had access to public domain films (until they came up with the downloadable "podcast"-style Rifftrax idea).

And I'm not sure why you stressed "real" when referring to MST3K. Bill Corbet didn't join the cast till years into its run, but Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy were there from the beginning. Hell, Murphy worked on the original local access version of the show before the Comedy Channel picked them up. Damn, I miss MST3K. But at least Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic are both around and hilarious!

Y'mean, Legend Films being public domain weasels with their own colorization department, that wanted one more desperate sales-gimmick excuse to flog "Little Shop of Horrors"?

I'd rather see Plan 9 in it's original glorious Black And White with no added laugh track as it is funny all by itself. It reigns as king of the bad films.

Ah, so you're familiar with the tale. Yeah, that's pretty much it. I will say that they were solid releases for often-abused public domain films. And hey, it's nice to have restored versions on hand for these live shows. So it all works out.

Curious, for these Rifftrax releases, do they include the Black and White versions as well? Can you also turn off the audio commentary as well?

Not on these releases, no. These are live recordings of the shows they did in front of a crowd. Sort of like a concert or a stand-up show.

If you buy the regular Rifftrax DVDs of these movies (the non-Live versions), they include the original black and white movies with the option to turn off the riffs and watch the movies normally. Those versions are not available on blu-ray yet, however.

There is one coming out, on March 6th, for our friends to the north. It's still Region A though, and it's up for pre-order right now.

Another classic. We still need Attack of the Killer Tomatoes for life to be complete
