I'm not sure if anyone knows the answer to this, but how are these pre 1924 films issued in 1080p, when all the reviews I've read on Our Hospitality and Three Ages, as well as Chaplin's The Rink on Modern Times are issued in 1080i due to frame rate issues?

Anyway, I have to say I'm not buying this (although I own every other Keaton Kino blu-ray). Wish Kino would get to releasing all of his silent features first, and then if Warner would releases his MGM movies... |

Just a couple days ago I was listening to a podcast on Buster Keaton's time at MGM. I knew of him before, but was not familiar with his body of work, his loss of creative control, nor his personal struggles with the studio. Coincidentally, I was given the DVD set of the first (1920-1923) Short Films Collection as an early Xmas gift from a friend of mine yesterday. After reading through this thread and some of the online reviews of the collection, I'll be diving into my very first Keaton experience very soon. Looks like I'm in for a treat. Presuming I like these as much as I think I will, what other essential Keatons would you all recommend? The General, Steamboat Bill Jr, and Sherlock Jr are already on my radar. Any other "must sees"? Thanks for any input.

In my opinion all of Keaton's silent films are a must see (with the possible exception of The Saphead).
The only major piece of Buster Keaton that is still missing is the extraordinary three-part documentary Buster Keaton: A Hard Act To Follow which is unavailable and has never had a proper US release on DVD or Blu (just laserdisc). I really, really wish Kino or Criterion or anyone would release that treasure -- it's really one of the finest documentaries I've ever seen on any subject. |

Most of Keaton's silent work in general is worth watching (though watch out for the blackface in Seven Chances and College), though I admit Go West and Spite Marriage didn't do much for me though they're admittedly better than most of Keaton's talkies. Some of the films I barely hear about that I thought were very funny are The Navigator, Battling Butler, and Three Ages. Our Hospitality is also pretty popular, and the waterfall climax is outstanding. Hope you enjoy them. I've been in love with Keaton for several years now and he encouraged me to dip more into silent comedy, which is wonderful for me since I tend to hate modern comedy more than most my age (that lousy new Ghostbusters movie being the epitome of why I don't see comedies anymore). In the past few years I've revisited Chaplin and dipped my toes into Harold Lloyd for the first time. Now I have Harry Langdon, Fatty Arbuckle, and Charley Chase on my radar. And I owe it all to the guy in the porkpie hat. |

While I was at it, I grabbed all three Death Wish sequels, both Missing in Action films, and the Poltergeist II and III MGM double feature. 9 films for a grand total of... $47. I'm already a fan of Hamiltonbooks. |
