Default Disney Non-Animated

When are we going to see more non-animated Disney films get releases? Here are just some of the ones I would like to see.

Disney has done a fantastic job with there classic animated releases. I haven't picked up a copy of The Rocketeer yet but the review on here says its really good but not great. I would like see Disney put more into getting some of there live action catalog titles released.

I think they could make some nice multi disc releases with some of these like Honey, I shrunk the kids and The Mighty Ducks sets as well as The Santa Clause 1 & 2 its a real shame that that less than stellar 3rd film is out but not the first two classics as well as a The Princess Diaries set!

Swiss Family Robinson (1960)
The Parent Trap (1961)
Flight of the Navigator (1986)
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989)
Honey, I Blew Up the Kid (1992)
The Mighty Ducks (1992)
Cool Runnings (1993)
D2: The Mighty Dukes (1994)
The Santa Clause (1994)
D3: The Mighty Ducks (1996)
RocketMan (1997)
The Parent Trap (1998)
The Princess Diaries (2001)
The Santa Clause 2 (2002)
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004)
Ice Princess (2005)

Well, I was able to cross The Rocketeer off my list from Disney, but I'd still love to see Dick Tracy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and the Black Hole.

Disney has historically been "late to the party" regarding home video releases, and this dates back to Beta/VHS, laser disc and DVD, but never so evident as with Blu-Ray. Now this comment is aimed at Disney live action films, and specifically, those produced under Walt Disney. I can recall during video tape's infancy when Disney's very first releases were the animated "Alice in Wonderland" and "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea." Disney tended to test the waters with these two films, and slowly but surely, the vaults opened and great movies eventually saw wide release in all the home theater formats mentioned previously. Regarding the live action classics, laser disc and DVD have seen the most releases, but neither so late into their maturity as Blu-Ray. I am quite puzzled by Disney reluctance to release their live action classics, and with the exception of news tidbits that "Twenty Thousand" had received a restoration and 4K HD scan, the Mouse House has been totally mum. Well, here's hoping that someone at Disney will realize that market saturation for Blu-Ray has come of age, and a large market for these cinematic gems exists, specifically:

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
Darby O'Gill and the Little People
The Black Hole
Swiss Family Robinson
Mary Poppins
In Search of the Castaways
Treasure Island
So Dear to my Heart
The Parent Trap
Pollyanna
Davy Crockett
The Moon Spinners
Summer Magic
Island at the Top of the World
Bedknobs and Broomsticks

Here are the live-action films of theirs I want most on Blu-ray:

Treasure Island
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Old Yeller
Darby O'Gill and the Little People
Pollyanna
Swiss Family Robinson
Babes in Toyland
The Parent Trap (1961)
Summer Magic
Mary Poppins
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Escape to Witch Mountain
Freaky Friday (1977)
Pete's Dragon
Return From Witch Mountain
Return to Oz
Flight of the Navigator
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
Honey, I Blew up the Kid
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Dick Tracy
The Muppet Christmas Carol
Hocus Pocus
The Santa Clause
101 Dalmatians
The Parent Trap (1998)
The Princess Diaries
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (Extended Edition)

I know both Princess Diaries films are supposed to be coming this spring while The Muppet Christmas Carol should be coming sooner rather than later. I wouldn't be surprised to see Return to Oz released to cross promote Oz: The Great and Powerful in 2013, and a 101 Dalmatians release to coincide with the animated one doesn't seem too far out of the question. Everything else is basically up in the air, though.

Maybe that has something to do with DVD having been a massive success from day one and Blu Ray requiring people to upgrade their tvs first which believe it or not, not everyone has done that yet.

People on here especially tend to forget that not everyone has an HDTV at the moment and even of those who do not everyone of them has a Blu Ray player yet and with DVD it was not the case no matter what TV set you owned you could enjoy the immediate benefits of DVD with Blu Ray unless you own an HDTV your basically just getting the DVD anyways.

There really is no reason why they couldn't be released in a dual format version if an existing HD master is available. I think the real reason lies in that the live action films of the 60s and 70s are for the most part...dated.

I like them because I was raised on them. They were the staple of the elementary school assembly in the 70s and 80s when they needed to occupy us for a half-day prior to Christmas break or the last day of school.

If you look at the programming currently run on the Disney Channel, these movies are not, dare I say "cool", with the pre-teens and tweeners who like Selina Gomez and the like.

And actually, DVD did not have massive success from the beginning. It launched in the Spring of 1997 and really did not take hold for several years. I bought my first DVD player in the Summer of 99' and there were deals out the wazoo to get people to buy discs (remember Redstar.com, Reel.com, etc.). Thedigitalbits.com used to run a monthly tab of the number of players shipped to retailers and it took quite a while for these numbers to become respectable.

If my memory serves me right, the bulk of the live action Disney stuff came out well after the animated titles, and they were bare bones and no effort/lackluster transfers. The Strongest Man in the World is showing a 2004 release for DVD, which sounds about right. I seemed to wait forever for this to eventually be released.

I guess i always forget that I didn't get into DVD early on, got my first player in Christmas of 2002 so by then things were rolling full force but still DVD took off much faster than Blu Ray is currently.

With regard to Hocus Pocus, I'm afraid the current release schedules to which I have access do not stretch that far into the future. Therefore, if you are happy to contact us in Summer next year, we may have the suitable information for you then.

Kind regards

Claire
