Default Xbox 360 pricing announced

Xbox 360 pricing announced

Microsoft has finally put to rest months of speculation, announcing official pricing and models for its upcoming Xbox 360 home entertainment console. The basic version of the Xbox 360 will run $299.99 USD, will a premium edition priced at $399.99 USD.

The core Xbox 360 model includes only the console without hard drive, wired controller and standard AV cable. For an extra $100, gamers receive a special console with metallic detailing, 20GB hard drive, wireless controller, remote control, headset, high-definition AV cable and an Xbox Live Silver membership.

Individually, the HD cables are priced at $40 USD, 20GB hard drive $100 USD and the wireless controller $50 USD, making the premium edition more economical for serious gamers.

In addition, because the Xbox 360 core model does not include a hard drive, gamers may need to purchase a 64 MB memory unit for $40 USD. Other accessories include a wireless network adapter, which runs $100 USD.

"While the system has the muscle to power awe-inspiring graphics, audio and online play, it's also got the intelligence to serve as a one-of-a-kind entertainment device that plays CDs, DVDs, MP3s and digital content from an array of devices, including portable music players and digital cameras," said Robbie Bach, Microsoft's chief Xbox officer.

Both editions of the Xbox 360 will make their debut in North America, Europe and Japan in time for the Christmas holidays - well before Sony's rival PlayStation 3 console reaches the market next spring.

It is pretty pricey considering they want to replace it in 4 years. Gates said the PS3 was the ferrari, but they dont charge much more than the xbox, Microsoft just shot itself in the foot.

Considering that the console will have an HD-DVD player, this can make a bad, bad advertising to the Blu-Ray...

But it will be only after that they will had this one, somehow with this price, it will work great... :?

What?! The XBox 360 will use 720p just like the original XBox. Yeah it's technically HD but it will not play HD-DVDs. The games are the only thing in 720p HD.

Again, it doesn't play HD-DVDs. And where do you get your one year head start number from? Last I read PS3 was due in spring '06.

march, april or mai for PS3 ?

mmm... first it doesn't seem a big gap in release dates but when you count the months... :?

Well time will tell but I don't believe there will be a head start of anywhere near that long. That info must come under the speculation that Sony may decide to delay PS3 if XBox 360 sales are weak. I think we all know XBox 360 won't do that bad, certainly not so much that Sony will take their sweet time releasing their competitive product.

There has been speculation that the XBOX 360 will have a HD-DVD drive at a later date. Though this doesn't rule out a possible Blu-Ray drive either. How this will work is anyone's guess. Will games ever be made for the format? will you be able to upgrade your 360 dvd drive to HD-DVD/Blu-Ray or whatever!?

There's also been speculation that the PS3 will be delayed til 2007 in the West. Who knows!?

I don't think so about the upgrade for the drives.
The xbox360 isn't build to change parts... Its not modular. Therefor there will be at least firmware upgrades, but I don't think you'll be able to change drive for example.

However, most people will buy an xbox360 for games, not for movies.
For PS3 that will be differently.
At the time that xbox360 may be equipped with a HD-DVD drive, by then HD-DVD players prices will have dropped and people will prefer a stand alone specialized HD-DVD player above a xbox360 if price doesn't matter... If HD-DVD succeeds.

Well at first Microsoft said there will NEVER ever be any HD-DVD or blu ray drive in the 360

Then a few weeks later bill gates said we are strongly considering the addition of a HD-DVD at a later date.

They also promised a 20 gig HDD in every system but didnt deliver.

Personally until I see the HD-DVD in the system I dont believe them at all.
