Default Upcoming players (inside info)

Some info about upcoming players, from an extremely reliable source:

- Denon, Daewoo, and Mitsubishi will be releasing Blu-ray players.

- In addition to the Funai, there is another sub-$500 SRP BD player coming from a "major CE".

- LG will only create universal players until a clear winning format starts to emerge, and they will then switch to that format as quickly as possible to lower costs.

- The Onkyo HD DVD player will be based on a Toshiba deck. So, basically it will be a rebadge.

I like the sound of a ~$500 BD Player.

Are these 2007, or at some unspecified point in the future?

Are we allowed to ask you if this "major CE" is one that already has a player out, or a new company entering the mkt?

This will be the same for WB's Total HD as well. I remembered a WB exec at the show stating they would produce Total HD "as long as it's needed". Which begs the question...needed for what?

Not surprising. I would love to know Microsoft's stake or guarantee in Meridian's player because, 100% honestly, I don't know what company would want to enter the fray on the HD DVD side right now.

The only hope of HD DVD survival in my mind is MS's HD DVD & HMDI XBOX 360, if that ever sees the light of day.

I'm interested in the major CE who is going to release a ~$500 player.

I'm guessing that it might be a Samsung with no analog outs or HQV processing. They could sell a player that is very similar to the current player, and just have HDMI out, component and 2ch analog/optical out. Either that or a Philips unit.

And I definately welcome a Denon unit, (which correlates with a post by Psiweaver) Mitsu, and a Daewoo. The more the merrier.

$500 is the price at which many, many standalones are going to be purchased.

A Denon BD player would be VERY significant. To a lot of people, whatever Denon backs shows it has the support of the ultra high end, and that will go a long way for people who want high end and are on the fence waiting to see what Denon does.

I'm guessing that the Onkyo was previously announced?

I am interested in Denon's unit. I figured they would be at least a year or two before announcing a unit. They are usually calculatedly late in joining.

The sub-$500 player is later this year. I suspect a Denon announcement would happen only when they are happy about a deck. That is, like Pioneer with the Elite, but without the pressure of having an announcement hanging over their head.

Good question. I wasn't told the name. I expect telling us whether it is a current producer or not would narrow it down too much.

Honestly, I wasn't told. But, that would be my guess. With Sony planning two Sapphire decks, it would seem reasonable that one of them would be entry level.

Yes, at CES 2007. It was the one HD DVD deck that actually had a real announcement from the manufacturer.

The Meridian announcement was a wishy-washy and could have several interpretations. And Microsoft really announced intent with the Chinese CE, not any concrete plans.

An update on the Denon BD player:

They are designing their own drive and software for their player, so it won't be out until the end of year (don't expect an announcement any time soon).
