Australia The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

I saw an "Advanced" screening of this on Friday night and absolutely loved it. Think it's going to be an exact copy of the original Swedish film? I'd point you to the quote on Rooney Mara's shirt in the film - "**** you, you ****ing ****".

Amazing film from start to finish. Incredible performances from everyone who was perfectly cast, impeccable direction, as usual, from the brilliant David Fincher, gorgeous and moody cinematography from Jeff Cronenweth and an amazing score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, proving that their Oscar win last year for The Social Network was no fluke.

10/10 film. I also got to watch it with beautiful digital projection, I've never seen a film look so good on the big screen like that ... The projectors at my local cinema kinda suck ... But this was like watching a blu-ray on the big screen. Gorgeous. Will probably see again once it's actually out.

I saw the advanced screening last Friday night too, I did like it but imo the Swedish theatrical version is a bit better, because there was more detail added to conversations in the Swedish version which made for a slightly better story.

I would disagree, actually. I've read the novels and Fincher's version had way more content in it than the Swedish film, including Blomkvist's relationship with Erika Berger and the parts where Lisbeth travels around as a blonde haired woman named Irene Nesser moving funds around into her own bank account ... And of course the ending where Lisbeth goes to tell Blomkvist how she feels only to see him with Berger ...

But hey, that's cool

Yes there was extended scenes in some parts such as those you have mentioned (which I suspect are in the extended edition of the Swedish version?), however I felt certain things in the Swedish theatrical version added more to the story such as, the revelation that Blomkvist having known Harriot Vanger when he was very young, and the way which he located Harriot at the end of the film. Also the fact the Lizbeth's guardian didn't give her the requested amount in the 1st instance. In the Swedish version Lizbeth was hacking into Mikael's computer and was simultaneously investigating Harriot's disappearance prior to working with Mikael on the case. That Lizbeth allowed Martin to die whereas in the American version she didn't have the opportunity to save him. That scene in the Swedish version also showed the flashback of Lizbeth's past where she burnt her father. All these things plus others helped give a better understanding of the characters mind sets and overall made for a better story imo. The things that you mentioned that were in the American version did not add as much to the story imo as those that I have outlined from the Swedish version.

I don't really think the addition of Mikael knowing Harriet added anything to the plot in the Swedish film. It felt hollow and didn't ring true to me. In the novel, Harriet did indeed look after Mikael as a young child but he didn't remember her at all because he was too young. In the Swedish film I feel the only reason why they made the character remember her was to give him motivation to take on the case. But it didn't work for me as well as they'd hoped, I just didn't buy it. Whereas in Fincher's version his motivation is simply that Vanger has information to effectively hit back at Wennerstrom. That made it far more personal for Mikael and gave him proper motivation for taking on the case in the first place.

The reveal of Harriet worked just as well, in my opinion, as it parallels Lisbeth herself. Lisbeth hides in the shadows and away from everybody whereas Harriet hides in plain sight. It's very interesting and is sleeker. The Martin death scene works just as well for me as Lisbeth's intent was very clearly to kill Martin, but the explosion beat her to it. I don't really think seeing a flashback was necessary for this film. We get some foreshadowing for this in the opening credit sequence, which in itself is a nightmarish telling of all three movies, and she tells Blomkvist this herself. Just because we weren't shown it doesn't mean it wasn't there.

Holy crap if you two are going to completely spoil the film at least have the common decency to put your posts in spoiler tags.

I made this thread to basically stay in the Australian board as it's coming out very soon here in Aus and thought we could discuss it there, but it was obviously moved ...

Apologies.

Yes I moved it as it is about the film, not the Blu-Ray.

It's totally unfair to say the Swedish version was more detailed. There were many things in the Swedish version that were not in the American version, but I can list just as many things included in the American version that were skipped in the original. Here r just the things that come to mind that r different in the two versions:
[Show spoiler] Things like...Blomkvist goes to jail, Harriet the babysitter, details on how Salander gets information, Berger, Vanger helping Millenium, Blomkvist and Salander both figuring out who the killer was, how Harriet was found, the scene with Harold Vanger, Salander as Irene, meeting Miriam Wu, Lisbeth and Polmgrin, Lisbeth and her mother, the christmas gift, what happened to Anilta, how they find Harriet, Blomkvist's daughter solving the numbers mystery and Im sure many more

Also it's not really fair to compare the extended version, which had scenes added for tv, to a theatrical cut. Who knows what would be added by Fincher if an extended version were released.
