Default Black Levels have a red-ish tint...

While watching a movie on Blu-ray, I notice that sometimes some of the shadows/blacks have a red-ish tint to 'em OR if the scene fades out it looks red-ish rather than black. Is this normal or does it have something to do with settings?

probably settings, as black should be "black"... or pretty darn close to it.

what TV do you have? (more info would be helpful! ...your setup?)

have you calibrated the settings using a disc or professional calibration? (or did you eyeball it?)

another possibility is the movie itself...unless this happens on all movies/tv?

and last but not least, the TV itself could be having issues.

I have a 32' inch Dynex, which I know is like a Best Buy brand but whatever, it works fine for now.

My settings are as listed:

Contrast: 95
Brightness: 54
Color: 50
Sharpness: 40

Color Temp.: Normal
Zoom Mode: Wide
Noise Reduction: Off
Overscan: On
Adaptive Contrast: Off

my TV is not professionally calibrated, nor is it calibrated from a disc. I adjusted it myself because none of the preset settings were working. These settings for my TV are fine for SOME movies. Other times, the blacks don't look... well black.

I don't mean to offend you, but with a Dynex... you get what you pay for. Like you said, it is the Best Buy brand LCD TV, which doesn't come with too many accolades to speak of.

That being said, it could be something settings related, but your settings seem pretty standard for not being calibrated. You could try fiddling with your color settings to see if that helps, though I'm sure you've already tried it. If it continues to bother you, you might try taking it back to Best Buy and swapping out for the same TV to see if another Dynex exhibits the same problem.

Okay, here's what's happening. In the "service menu" the color push for "red" is set to a more dominant position than the "blue" or "green" push. Without having access to your "service menu" you can only adjust the user menu. The easiest fix is to set your color temp to "cool". This should remove the red push in the blacks. From there, you should get a test disc or use the THX Optimizer found on several DVDs and Blu-rays to adjust the color control.

Also, your "sharpness" control shouldn't be set that high. I would recommend a setting between 10-20. Setting the sharpness too high adds artificial edge enhancment and can ruin picture quality.

I also have a 32" Dynex that I use to keep in the bedroom...but I have since bought a second Panasonic plasma...

but for the money, I really liked the Dynex. (I moved it into my sons room)

My Dynex is a few years old, and still produces a great picture! Does your's have a "back lighting" option? Id turn this down...

This was my settings, probably does not apply to a newer model?

Mine does have this option but to access it I have to press like 6 buttons. T.T I'll try that and the other guy's suggestion.

I give up. I've been trying to adjust my TV so Scream 4 can look like this. ( https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Scre4m-Blu-ray/24368/ )

But have failed so far, it's tiring and I have a major head ache.

Spears & Munsil High-Definition Benchmark Blu-ray

...you can also discuss your issue here. The creators of that calibration disc are also members here and will be glad to help your cause!

Sticky: Spears & Munsil Blu-ray Test Disc

Id start with giving the disc a try first! It will get your colors, contrast, brightness, tint etc. more accurate.

I'm aware of calibration discs, I was trying to avoid having to purchase one but I guess at this point I have no choice. :/ *sigh*

You don't have too...even the typical THX 'optimizer' on an old DVD is better than no calibration disc at all.

Try The Incredibles, Star Wars, I even think Pearl Harbor and the Terminator movies have it.

You could also get the settings from "Tweak TV" website. You enter your tvs brand and model # and they usually have the optimum user settings for your model. This will not be as good as pro calibration but will be better than none at all.

Ah, I discovered this earlier. I have "Cars" on DVD and will re-try the optimizer. I kind of breezed through it when I used to earlier.

I re-tried it. It looks okay but some of the blacks are still red-ish. I'm gonna officially give up on doing it myself and probably get a professional to do it.

I saw that on my old Sammy LCD while watching The Orphanage. Only time I ever saw it so I figured it was the movie. Hmmmm....

It's only really noticeable on my Resident Evil: Afterlife Blu-ray. I mean, it does kind of happen in Scream 4, the killer's costumes at one point has a red-ish tint to it instead of being black and some of the shadows looks red. I dunno if it's the movie, TV or what. I think I should get a new TV because I'm getting aggravated by how the blacks aren't black at all. >.<
