Default Looking for good A/V Preamp...does such a thing exist?

I'm looking for a preamp that essentially does what the Sony DA5200ES receiver does...lots of inputs and switching capabilities for component and HDMI. Does such an animal exist?

Best for the money is the Anthem AVM50, i think thats the name. Very pricy though, like 5k.

Have you checked out the AVM 40 or AVM 50 from Anthem?

Thanks, but are the Anthem HDMI specs even compatible with the PS3, SACD or Blu-ray?

Kind of a pointless question as I'm not gonna splurge on that puppy no matter what.

Anything else out there besides the Anthem?

Default Nice thing..

about the Anthem is the ability to upgrade it over time. Makes it easier to slip it past the wife as technology changes I'm waiting for them to announce pricing on upgrading my AVM20 to the AVM50. It will probably come in around $2000 from what I've heard. I saved about $2000 buying the SXRD (sale) vs the XBR2 (never on sale) so that I can could eventually get it. The video processor inside the AVM50 should be much nicer and more flexible along with a lot more goodies. I figure I may end up with a better picture than the XBR2 anyway

I can vouch that the AVM20 is a very nice sounding and flexible unit. I've enjoyed the AVM20 and MCA50 amp for about 3.5 years.

One note - it comes with a 5 year warranty. About 6 months ago one of the amplifier channels died. Took it into the dealer and had it back in a week - no charge, no questions asked - no hassle - very nice. I'm pretty sure it was one of the kids that fried the amp playing around with the cables at the back and shorted something.

Some people are buying used AVM20's and 30's ...

The HDMI is not going to be 1.3 AFAIK which they say won't matter for hi-def audio..but I may wait awhile to see if they upgrade it with 1.3 for the (future) video potential of HDMI 1.3.

The AVM20 was originally over $3k which makes the PS3 such a bargain for what you get. Doesn't it.

my response would be yes. that is assuming of course that the hdmi version is 1.2 (for sacd) or higher. otherwise, 1.1 would be fine

A long ways away from the likes of a Denon 2807 or stuff like that.
