Had an opportunity to skim through some of this tonight. Definitely my new 3D demo disc. The depth was absolutely superb in the few scenes I tested (particularly the boat/piranha attack scene).

Worth every cent.

Mine arrived from Amazon yesterday, it has a nice lenticular slip cover on it. I'm looking forward to watching it, as I mentioned earlier in this thread I saw it at the theater and was very impressed with the 3D on it. I bought the anaglyph version back when it came out and was very disappointed as it didn't come close to the theaterical experience. Hopefully we can view it tonight if we get back from pine derby racing early enough

By reading the review it seems the reviewer is reviewing the visual effects of the movie rather then the 3D transfer. I agree that the films effects look behind its times. It looks like something that came out in 1998 rather then 2008. But its 3D presentation is top notch. Its a native 3D production and the natural sense of depth is better then any conversion I have seen.

As a movie its a mediocre C grade effort that is more like a theme park ride then an actual movie. It really is something that should have come out in 2010 when 3DTV owners were desperate for content as it would have likely got more sales back then. With equally gorgeous 3D from so many much better movies out on the format avalible now I certainly can't recommend this movie for the high price its selling for

Thanks for this review Jimmy Smith. I will wait to get this one till it's 24.99 or so. It's too bad they didn't get it into the stores yet, but maybe it'll be there around Feb 10th, when the sequel hits, which by the way, looks kind of like Honey I Shrunk the Kids. Fun but a bit silly. Mainly for kids.

But it's nice to hear the 3D depth was really good. Would you say on par with Avatar or a notch or two less depth and pop? (pop referring to how objects contrast from foreground, mid and background, not pop out).

OK, watched it this evening and wow, all I can say is that everyone that's been complaining about the lack of popout in 3D movies needs to get this one! It never lets you forget you're watching it in 3D, LOL! It's a fantastic conversion, it's just as much fun watching it at home as I remember it being in the theater. One thing to keep in mind is that this is not a movie that's meant to be taken seriously. It's outrageous and completely unrealistic, but it's a ton of fun. During the mine cart segment I was thinking "man, this is just like a ride at Six Flags" so I chuckled when I saw Jimmy post the same sentiment 3D in movies like Tron takes a back seat to the story, but in Journey the 3D is front and center throughout! I really enjoyed it

Yeah, it was attached to the slip cover. It's an 8.00 off ("up to" 8.00) coupon that can only be used for one ticket. I haven't redeemed it yet, you peel it off and it has a number on the back. You have to go to a web site and enter it, then print out the coupon.

I watched it and I agree with other posters here. I thought the 3D was decent enough, some good pop out moments.

Journey to the Center of the Earth is a proud gimick picture. While movies like Avatar use 3D naturally and try not to distract Journey goes out of its way to always remind you that its a 3D picture. I generally prefer natural depth like Avatar but theme park ride pictures like Journey are Ok every now and then

Before Avatar, most if not all the 3D movies are about pop out, not depth right?

Did Amazon raise the price for this movie?

Sorry, I meant conversion from theatrical release to BD. I'm well aware that it's native 3D, I should have worded that post differently.

I wish there were more theme park 3d films if only for show pieces, I think they are fun and make for good social films.

No. Many of the 3D movies from the 1950s focused on depth.

Quote:
MYTH: 3D Movies of the 1950's were loaded with gimmicks to show off the process
Not true. For the most part, the filmmakers respected the "stereo window" and did not resort to gimmicks in order to enhance the process. The only studio guilty of excessive exploitation would have been Columbia, and more specifically the William Castle/Sam Katzman productions. However, for every film that was guilty of throwing an over abundance of objects at the camera (FORT TI, CHARGE AT FEATHER RIVER, MAN IN THE DARK, SPOOKS) there were many, many others which utilized great restraint in their use of the process. Check out the superb cinematography on HONDO, SECOND CHANCE, I THE JURY, INFERNO, MISS SADIE THOMPSON, TAZA-SON OF COCHISE and THE GLASS WEB for some excellent examples of the dimensional process.

The often-cited paddleball sequence in HOUSE OF WAX was there for a very specific reason: that sequence was immediately following the intermission point. Director Andre deToth felt the barker was an effective way to bring the audience back into the story. In fact, in the following scene Vincent Price comments, "We won't need him once we're established." How true!

The overuse of gimmicks became commonplace in the 1970's and 1980's with movies such as COMIN' AT YA, TREASURE OF THE FOUR CROWNS, FRIDAY THE 13TH 3-D and ANDY WARHOL'S FRANKENSTEIN.
