Default Getting the BD30 tomorrow

With my setup I want HDMA over bitstream and I want my standalone to give me the HD sound I'm hearing about.

I've heard ALOT of really good reviews about this player - this forum's been great. Thanks to all you who posted a review.

I'll be rubbing my hands when I get to hear HDMA for the first time

Yah...picked it up...plugged it in...

and loved it!

Beautiful picture. The audio was stunning. And of course, that little ...

DTS HDMaster

light on my ES5300 amp made me smile.

I wandered around to each speaker and listened to the ambient sounds. So clear, so crisp.

I sat in the seating position and just closed my eyes. True HD sound really is the business.

What a great buy.

Exclamation Minor Warning...

There are MANY reports online (here, and elsewhere) that the BD30 has play issues with the film "Sunshine".

My experience was:

1. Two pauses (like a layer switch pause on DVD, and no, I'm not talking about the subliminal snapshots, although the first pause did happen right before the first snapshot in my one play through)

2. Two or three incidences of "stuttering" all occurring in scenes where the audio really ramped up in the last third of the film.

According to some reports, the latest firmware release (1.4) does not address these issues.

The amusing thing about these issues is that the Blu-ray was encoded by Panasonic

But most standalone players have been reported to have at least one or two discs that have issues with them. And the BD30 has been almost flawless for me otherwise.

My hope (since I really liked Sunshine and will buy it eventually), is that a future firmware release will address these issues...

All in all, having player/disc issues is nothing new since DVD went through the same issues in it's first 4-5 years. The only difference being that back then, most if not all DVD players were not able to have their firmware updated...

Well Im getting a BD50 when available for DTS-HD MA (and all other audio formats) decoding for now, and Bitstream for later when I get a better receiver. Also Fan noise can drive me nuts, although i think I got one of the loudest ones (launch 60gb).

Good point, not as bad as a 360 with the jumbo jet sound of a take off.

Enjoy your new toy!

The pauses are brief and don't spoil the overall experience. I'm beginning to think this is normal because out of my 80 titles, Sunshine is the only movie with issues, so far.

OP, enjoy your BD30, I know I am

Congrats on buying an excellent player. We own one of the first Panasonic blu players and have never had a problem with it.

looks like a pretty solid player. just a couple questions for anyone who feels like...

1) Does it suffer from the dreaded LFE bug?

2) How's the SD DVD upscaling on it?

It have -5db LFE on PCM material

The upscaling is only ok... depend if you really want it that much. Like i said in a previous thread, i only have 1 DVD left (movie) (+ 4 shows and AVIA) so i can't really test that out..

But at least you don't have to pray for a title to work (like Samsung)... and Panasonic seems to put out an update every month right now so it's nice..

Congrats on the purchase. I am hoping the price drops $100 for Presidents day sale. I have 2 $100 AMX gift checks to use for the purchase.

1) LFE sounded to me and looked good according to the AVR. Anything specific I should look for?

2) I've not checked SD DVD yet. Still buying Blu's like a mad-man.

Overall, this is a fantastic player. Truely awesome seeing DTS HDMaster on my amp. But the sound...oh the sound...so clear...surround channels so crisp, ambient sounds so enthralling!

And as a backup for profile 2.0 I've got my PS3. I'll watch the movie first for its visual and audio glory and then take it over to the PS3 for when I want BD Live (when it's available).
