Default There Will Be Blood: Overhyped?

I saw this movie tonight, and could only come out with extreme disappointment. While Daniel Day-Lewis did a fine job acting, there just did not seem to be much purpose to the movie for me. It seemed like nearly three hours of a movie that basically didn't go anywhere. I don't want to put any spoilers in here right now, but this one I think this was WAY overhyped, the score was grating on the ears, the editing was terrible, and the story, and character development (or lack thereof) was without purpose. Thumbs down, IMHO. Just a warning to those who see all of the super high ratings for this movie, take it with a grain of salt.

What are the opinions of anyone else here who has seen this movie?

I haven't seen it yet. I wait for it to come out on DVD. Its only playing on one screen here. $ showings a day, but I know I will be the only one in there. It feels weird being in there by myself. It was like that when I went to see Balls of Fury. The movie has been out since Dec. and I didn't know about it until I went to see Rambo and saw a Poster of the movie. Like I said, I'll wait.

Paul Thomas Anderson is one of my favourite filmmakers out there. I think the problem is that people set their expectations so high that it becomes ridiculous. The key to enjoying movies more is to not set any expectations at all.

I will see this movie, no matter what.

The more I think about this movie the more I find it hard to believe that this actually got nominated for Picture of the Year. To each his own I guess. I wouldn't even rate this in my top 2,000 movies.

I looked forward to it for a long time. The movie is a piece of art. Every character, every actor really did an excellent job. Daniel Day Lewis is in my opinion the best actor on the planet. I think you really have to go in knowing your watching a PTA film. Between this a no country for old men are my fav's for the year, i still have to watch into the wild which i hear is amazing.

I saw it two weeks ago and I unquestionably thought it was the best of the five films nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. I've seen Juno, Atonement, Michael Clayton, and No Country for Old Men as well.

Great films are not meant for everyone. This is one movie I've been waiting very patiently to watch and hopefully tomorrow I'll and give my own opinion afterwards in this thread again.

They do have quite the marketing machine behind this movie. I am waiting for it to come out for home viewing and will certainly take a look.

I just watched it tonight. All I have to say is "what a waste of time." There were intriguing parts, but there are no redeeming qualities about Daniel Day-Lewis' character. No doubt he did a great acting job, but great acting doesn't denote a great a movie. There was no plot. Last time I checked great movies not only have great characters, but great plots.
I am in awe of why this is so highly touted. It just boggles the mind.

Out of all of the nominated films, I have only seen this one. A few friends who have seen the others say this one was the best film of the bunch. I thought the movie was pretty good. The actors really played their roles well. I don't think the movie lives up to the hype, like another movie that was recently released (Cloverfield). Daniel Day-Lewis was spot on for the particular part and Paul Dano also impressed me. I honestly couldn't take Kevin J. O'Connor seriously because all I can see him as is Benny off of the Mummy.

To me, I don't see myself buying this as I feel the lasting appeal doesn't exist. Like a few mentioned, it does feel a little drawn out. If I had this in my collection, I don't think I would choose it at all whenever I'm picking out something to watch.

I just saw it like an hour ago, and it was Brilliant, not something overwhelming, great story for what it was. Yes i agree, it had some wholes in the story with the oil and stuff, but the ending was brilliant and loved Daniel Day-Lewis. Im so happy that that thing happened at the end (you know what i mean )

That one I partially agree with, BUT, it seems like the Pictures of the Year for the past ten years or so seem to be, with the exception of a couple in here, generally very well received by the general populace.

2007 - The Departed
2006 - Crash
2005 - Million Dollar Baby
2004 - LOTR - Return of the King
2003 - Chicago
2002 - A Beautiful Mind
2001 - Gladiator
2000 - American Beauty
1999 - Shakespeare in Love
1998 - Titanic
1997 - The English Patient

I have not been able to go to the theater all that much, because my five year old son is just too wild (not that I would take him to see this types of movies anyways). However, I just went to see No Country for All Men, and wow...it is a great film. I have not seen There will be Blood or Juno, but I do not see those movies beating No Country for Old Men in the Oscar race. I hear that the girl from Juno is the top runner for the Oscar for Best Female Actress, probably a cute film

It think it was strangely flawed, but still a great movie. A movie this unique is not going to appeal to everyone.

A friend of mine saw it. I haven't seen it and have no desire to see it. She really didn't like it and couldn't believe that it had been nominated for best picture. She said it really didn't have a plot.

Juno was a million times better than There Will Be Blood. No comparison.

It's one of my very favorite films of the year. 3rd favorite of the year, to be precise.
