I think they already have . . . I didn't read the entire article to know if it mentioned this, but Onkyo had an HD DVD player on the slate and they cancelled it. That was a few months ago.

I had also thought that they either cancelled the release, or dropped it soon after it was on the shelves, nobody wants HD-DVD, especially "high-end" HD-DVD that is just a rebadged Poshiba anyways.

I've read somewhere that they produce high-quality electronics... it'll be nice if they support Blu-ray...

Thumbs up Onkyo Dropping HD DVD Support

Quote:
Onkyo appears to be the latest HD DVD defector, announcing they're "suspending" support for the format. This comes on the heels of Blu-ray and Warner's coup de grace and less than a year after Onkyo announced its lone HD DVD player, the DV-HD805. They haven't closed the door all the way, but does anyone else see Onkyo "resuming" support for HD DVD?

If you look here they have the Onkyo hd dvd player for sale. Wonder if they will be taking this down anytime soon. To top it all off it's a rebadged Toshiba player for $799!

I was confused when I heard last year that a quality company like Onkyo was coming out with a DUD player. Even before a BD player. You would think these big companies would stick a wet finger into the air once in a while to see which way the wind was blowinig before they invest big $$$ into R & D for a futureless widget.

Hello Marcusarilius.

Toshiba is one of the major shareholder of ONKYO, it is main reason of ONKYO's alliance to HD DVD. But now, it seems even Toshiba cannot save ONKYO's defection.

Interesting. Hope the defection spreads to the board of directors soon. How much more money do the investors expect to loose from Toshiba's pathetic lies and attempts to put a rosy hue on DUD's future. Can't be much longer I would think.

I have a great deal of respect for Onkyo. I only wish Toshiba had enough self repect for themselves and close this thing down once and for all. The fact that they are willing to sell the remaining DUD players and tell an uninformed public that DUD is still viable with a future that can survive on two studios for support is criminal. I will never. Ever, buy any Toshiba product as long as I live.... They should save face and reinstitute a tradition from the past.

Thumbs up

Onkyo didn't really produce any HD-DVD players. The only thing they offered (dv-hd805) was a tweaked version of the Toshiba (hd-xa2) player. See the following links:

^ I agree.

How many blows can HD DVD take?

How many more are going to be dealt in the next two months?
