Default Question about DVD vs new formats

Okay I know Blu ray and HD-DVD are HD formats and DVD is not. But current DVDs can support 480 HD and the Revolution and 360 both use DVDs. I dont know what HD the Rev will have but the 360 boasts 1080i HD and 720P. So if DVDs can hold high definition games and TV and movies why is it not also HD?

it's all about bandwidth and storage and dvd's just don't have enough of it. Just like cd's or floppy disks at the time. Even for standard definition, compression rates of dvd's are just too hard which introduced artifacts and a picture that's too blocky and unnatural. Users just need to upgrade to a newer tech

Any idea how this will directly affect the consoles other than ps3? Wont 360 have some problems running a 1080i game with said DVD discs?

oh yes they will have problems. Namely, very heavy compression codec will force xbox processor to be much more involved in decompressing the data instead of executing games which may be evident once it's released. Or worse yet, it may force developpers to cut down on the graphics and data to make them decent to play

Now that makes sense all I have heard is that theres no way next gen games will take up the full 9 gig on DVD....which doesnt make sense because games should be increasing in size with all the better quality graphics and everything else. I prolly should have stuck this in the other video game thread oh well :(
