Sorry if I am sounding like a newbie, actually I am one!
Now that Blu Ray has basically won the war, it is time to buy a High Def Disk Player, Blu Ray of course. From what I can gather, the PS3 has more features than anything else and is priced less than all but a few previous version models. So, even though I have no desire to ever play a game on it, why woudl I want to buy anything else to play movies? Am I missing something? Is there some hidden problem with using it as a disk player? |

I bought a PS3.
I do play the occasional game on it though. I see no reason to buy a stand alone. Well,.. if the stand alone had analog outputs and decoders for all the audio formats then that could be usefull to people like me who have older AV Recievers. But,.. now I have an excuse to upgrade to HDMI audio which is really the better answer anyway. -Brian |

Well it's only a matter of time before PS3 gets the firmware update on DTS-MA which btw only Fox titles have as lossless sound and the best sound is from uncompressed PCM which the PS3 has no problem decoding.
PS3 will also become Profile 2.0 or Final version of Blu-ray Disc player so you just win with buying a PS3. You get a great entertainment hub that can do everything from going online from your living room couch wirelessly to playing great music that's saved on your 40 GB or 80 GB Harddrive to play demos and fun games from PSN and you can always check out the big fuss on some game that everyone is talking about here. |

I think that the PS3 is the only player out there that is upgradable to Profile 2.0

although there are other topics on this, I believe that the 2 draw backs are that:
A) The PS3 does not support universal IR remotes. There is no IR port on the PS3 and the blu-ray remote uses bluetooth and not IR. B) DTS HD MA. The PS3 CAN play DTS, and plays lossless as well. But it can not bitstream or decode DTS HD MA (master audio). There is a rumor that they will add the ability to decode it in a future upgrade. There is nothing stopping it from decoding the codec itself, they apparently have decided to wait until more players support DTS HD MA before they add it to the PS3. So the DTS HD MA argument is weak as few movies support it, fewer players support it, and it is likely that the PS3 will support it in the future. There are also work around for the IR universal remote but they are far from perfect. Rumors have it that there will be a device that can receive IR signals and transmit the proper bluetooth signals so you can use universal remotes with the PS3 someday, but that is still just rumor. The biggest advantage of the PS3 is the fact that it is nearly future-proof. It can handle major upgrades and is powerful enough to decode most anything you throw at it. So if you get one, you are likely to never need to buy a stand alone, unless you want a dedicated player. |

The main things I see are:
1. Lack of DTS-MA 2. Form factor - some people just have to have the same type of gear 3. BT remote - some people just have to have one remote for everything With the 40G PS3, I believe the noise and heat problems are gone. The only other thing I've seen are some personal objections to having a "game system" in their living room. Some of these folks believe that a game console has no place in a home theater system and should only be in the kids' playroom. That said, I love my PS3 and can't believe that any of these reasons could really outweigh the many advantages that it has over standalone players. |

If I wasn't a gamer, I'd still get a PS3... It's the most future-proof of all the players out there. You don't have to wait for the future machines to come out.

Yeah, not a gamer but I picked it up thinking it was the most future proof. When the stand alones begin to diverge in a definitive way I'll look into a stand alone.

Cosmetics : The Noise [audio cosmetic, very important issue imo], the jarring appearance in an HT setup [visual cosmetic].
Outputs : Constrained to the 1.3 hdmi spec output pretty much, not able to bitstream the newer codecs out. Mixed bag as to the benefit this provides or not though, some folks do swear by the advantage though, *shrug* There's also supposed difference in picture quality, but well, I can't really get into that since 1) I have 1080i screen and B) I don't have a stand-alone to compare against or the tech know-how to figure it out ![]() |
