I also just popped in my Supercop/Twin Dragons disc and TD is indeed 2.35:1. I even chapter skipped through the whole movie and the AR never changes that I can tell.

There are probably very few, if any, theaters in the US that can show 1.66:1. Truman Show played in 1.85:1. 1.66:1 was probably the camera negative ratio. Therefore both ratios are correct: one presents it as filmed and the other as screened in theaters.
I took those two off. I suppose I'll leave The Truman Show in the list even though the difference in 1.66:1/1.85:1 to 1.78:1 is negligible.

I suppose the reason you pulled Supercop off was because of that particular version of it, but the Echo Bridge version of Supercop is chopped. (Per the original poster's indication about it.) You should add it back to the list.

Oh and thanks for the list, I'll have to watch for some of these. (It doesn't bother me much 1.78 vs 1.85 (maybe since my TV overscans them anyway), but I recall some dvds that should have been 1.66 that just looked odd when changed to 1.78 (and overscanned some more on top of that).)

I added it back with an EB note.

Thanks very much. I know 1.85:1 to 1.78:1 doesn't bother most people, but I'd personally have the OAR no matter what.

Yes, it was, which makes the BD even more annoying.

It might be worth adding a note against the Truman Show entry to say that the ratio change was achieved by stretching the image rather than matting/zooming. If nothing else, it could save some people from spending money on a botched transfer.

Getting 1.78 from a 1.85 doesn't bother me at all but getting 1.78 from 2.25 or 2.39 drives me nuts.

Please add Disney's The Fox and the Hound to the list. Its OAR situation is sticky because it's the last DAC--and the only one presently on BD--from the era (beginning with 101 Dalmatians) where Disney animated its films at Academy ratio (1.37:1), presumably for TV showings and to avoid cost overruns from their prior widescreen efforts (mainly Sleeping Beauty), but usually instructed theaters to project the film at around 1.75:1.

The original FatH is presented on the BD at 1.66:1. Though Disney fans will argue as to whether 1.37:1 or 1.75:1 is the correct OAR for DACs of this era (though more will lean to 1.75:1 for FatH as almost all theaters were widescreen by 1981), either way 1.66:1 is definitely *not* its OAR, except possibly in Europe. (Edit: It was open-matte 4:3 on its previous DVD release.)

However, its straight-to-video sequel (on the same BD) does *not* belong on this list, as it was animated (and presented on BD) at 16:9.

I just did some looking around and it appears that its OAR is 1.37:1. I have added it to the list.

Well, I will say this: watching Excalibur is mildly torturous with all the top of the heads just barely clipped off from the 1:66 to 1:78 change it it annoys me no end...why the couldn't clip more of the bottom is beyond me if they're going to move into butchery. At least then it might not be so noticeable...

Sorry for the bump ... and I know this was briefly discussed ... but any way you should separate the 1.85 -> 1.78 entries out? It's tough to scour through all of those to find the real offenders of 2.40 -> 1.78 (or worse).

HD, I don't know why it's not listed but considering it's a North American release, you might want to add the Blade Trilogy, released in Canada by Alliance. I seem to recall that the first movie was definately cropped for home video release. I don't know about Blade 2 and Blade Trinity, but I do know that the first film was cropped/altered from its original theatrical release for home video.

it's a source of discontent for Blade movie fans everywhere.

Running Scared (2006).
The German one is the correct 2.39, but the N.A. is 1.78

I'll do some work on this list today and I'll separate the 1.85:1 to 1.78:1 ones out. Please keep the entries to the thread coming.

What category does THE DARK KNIGHT fall under, since it goes back and forth from one aspect ratio to another. I still do not understand why the Bluray had this since it was noticeable and quite annoying. I was told that this was because one of the aspects shown was from the imax imagery, but the "imax" aspect ratio on the Bluray is very different from the theatrical imax image. It was awful. And I along with thousands bought into this stupidity. They should have released it in either one or the other or at least with both versions separate and not one jumping back and forth between aspect ratios.

Because a fair portion of the film was shot in IMAX while most of the film was shot in 35mm (2.39:1). IMAX's native aspect ratio is 1.44:1, which is relatively close to 1.78:1. This is why BDs such as The Dark Knight, TRON: Legacy, and Transformers: ROTF have shifting aspect ratios. It's actually about as close to OAR as you're going to get. There's so few of these due to the high costs of shooting in IMAX. If the masses feel a list of these is warranted I'll add it to the original post.
