Question Have you ever upgraded a DVD that you have never seen to Blu-ray?

THIS post gave me the idea to ask this question.

I don't believe I have ever done this but I will admit that I have considered upgrading a DVD of a movie that I own but have never seen to Blu-ray. Considering it is as far as I will ever go though.

I say sell the DVD and use that money to put towards the BD. I have been doing this since 2007 and only have a few DVDs left.

I use to own about 1000 DVD's. I am down to about 600 DVDs with now over 300 Blus. So, Yes I do upgrade all the time and some upgrades I have never seen. I will do this if the Blu price is fantastic. I must be crazy.

Well, I recently sold Citizen Kane on DVD to Amazon.com and I have never seen the movie, I bought that DVD like 10 years ago and I considered buying the Blu-ray and I am embarrassed to
[Show spoiler]...and should be! to
admit that.

I will NEVER upgrade a DVD of a movie that I have never seen.

for example.....
You own Lost in Translation on DVD and have never seen the movie, your DVD is still in shrink wrap from when you bought it several years ago, then you go and buy the Blu-ray version of it today. Why did you do this?

Yes, Forbidden Planet, a favorite 50's sci-fi movie. I never did get around to looking at the DVD, & bought the Blu-ray when Amazon UK had it for Ł5...& I haven't seen the Blu-ray yet!

I've upgraded a couple titles that I hadn't got around to watching the DVD, but never a movie I haven't seen before.

Did that for the Criterion editions of Thin Red Line and Seventh Seal. In one instance I'd got 'em on DVD and Wings of Desire on BD. This was because these DVD's were cheaper than their BD counterparts and I still wasn't sure how much HD would do for older films that had great DVD transfers. Once I saw Wings of Desire on my 50" screen, I realized my error and sold them off for nearly full price to a friend.

Note: I'd seen the movies of course, just not on these DVD's

The Criterion Thin Red Line is the only one that springs to mind. I saw it on rental when it was released, bought it but never opened it and then bought the blu last year and still haven't got round to watching it.

The only one I can think of is The Deep. I had seen bits and pieces of it on television, bought the dvd for like three bucks at Big Lots, never opened it, but just got a used copy on blu recently because it was a good price.

I've done that too! I can't remember how many blind buy DVDs have been upgraded on Blu-ray, but I've done it. At the time, I was able to sold my DVDs at $12 or $10 and I found many Blu-rays at $10 or less from Video Stores. So it was a great deal!

Looking at my history, I like 95% of my blind buys...

I have never done this, mainly because I've never bought a movie on any format that I've never taken out of the shrink wrap, let alone not watched. Untill I came to this site, I'd never heard of anyone stockpiling disc that they've never so much as opened. The funny thing is, the people who do this have never indicated that they are doing this intentionally. I'm not saying that no one collects for future monetary value (I imagine some of the people on this very forum have bought multiple copies of Limited Edition releases so they can keep one sealed, and have one to watch....hindsight being 20/20, I wish I woulda done that with Watchmen: Ultimate Edition, BU's Bird w/ The Crystal Plumage, Blade Runner: LE, etc...),but most of the post in relation to this have sounded as if they just hadn't gotten around to it.

I did the exact same thing with a different Malick film, The New World.

I've done this a lot for lot of "classic" films. By "classic", I mean films that I have enjoyed very much at the theaters or some other viewing. I have bought these on DVDs, but never watched again on DVD, but then they will be on sale on Blu-ray and I'll buy them again. Examples include Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, Apocalypse Now, Star Trek movies, etc.
