Default HALO too over rated

I can get a big flaming for this but after hearing many reviews of this, i heard that the actual single player game is actually CRAP to be quite frank and all that saves this game is it's great online mode.

Their probably is no denying that it had a huge online popularity but is it really games like HALO that will be the type of games that give devlopers a reason to actually concentrate more on online play than actual single player gameplay.

I've never actually played a console game online to date but that will change when i get a PS3, i seem to think off line gameplay is still as important if not more so.

Games should first and foremost be great single player games IMO and not expect a great online mode to be their saving grace. Online gameplay is on the uptake but single gameplay should not be made shoddy in favour of a great online mode. Some people still like to play a great off line game as well, not just buy one to just play online

I loved Halo 1 and 2 I'll be playing the online multi-player until Halo 3 comes. I love blu-ray for movies, but haven't found any games I like for the PS3. I like 1st person shooters that allow you to get shot a few times like Halo since you have an energy shield, I like the weapons, the levels and everything about Halo. I also like the controller lay out better on the 360, not so cramped up and close together like the PS3 WARRIOR I M is my tag.

Like i said, the real and only true LURE of HALO is it's great multi player mode, i wonder how much of you actually think that the HALOs have as good a single player mode as other FFSs. HALO simply put is a great online game but a crap single player game.

True I wish they had a co-op mode you could on xbox live so you could have like 3 or 4 people do the campaign with more enemies and space etc. I just hate having to split my tv up into cross sections to do that. I liked Halo 1 campaign though.

I agree with you NARMAK that Halo's single player mode is very weak but that is not what makes this game. Its multi-player and online modes are so far superior to the majority of other games that even if Halo didn't have a single player mode it would still be one of the best games ever made. Yes it would be nice to have a game the excels in both single and multi player modes however I see nothing wrong with designing games to feature either one or the other. Maybe Halo 3 will have a better single player mode but if not I will still be in line to pick it up because the multiplayer and online aspects are amazing.

I thought the first was 'OK', but i dont see how its one of the best games of all time. Never played part 2, nor do I plan to. Part 3 will have to show me something really impressive in order for me to think about it.

with the demise of arcades online play give those quarter pumpin feinds a place to get that competitive fix. I think online will continue to grow and grow and thats a good thing, but I agree that I hope it's not in favor of making weak offline campaigns. The campaigne is why I buy a game, the online mode (FOR ME) is just the icing on the cake.

I think the acheivments system is a revolutionary step in gaming, and I think sony needs to incorporate this into their online strategy asap.

I enjoyed the first HALO a lot and thought H2 was kind of "meh..." more of the same really. The Resident Evil games are examples of a game franchise that are not merely rehashes... Resident Evil 4 for example I think is the best of the bunch.

You are right in that a game should not have to rely on online play to be a great game... it should be a great game in it's own right.

RESISTANCE: FALL OF MAN takes a lot of flack (mainly from xbox fanbois) for being a "run of the mill" FPS. And while I concede that it is yet another FPS, it's a damn good one that is well executed with a cool story. It's a hell of a lot of fun to play in single player mode or with your pals... and the online play is great (and best of all - it's FREE). And I can't really say as much for HALO 2.

The fanbois are calling HALO 3 "the ps3 killer" which I have to laugh at.

For it to make me forget my ps3, HALO 3 had better also be able to make my waffles just the way I like them, take out the trash, clean out the gutters, paint my shed, file my tax return and keep my beer cold.

Default The campaign..

modes are it for me - either co-op or single player. How many multi-player death matches can you have before you wanna blow your own brains out from boredom

Halo was great because of the campaign story. Assault on the Control room was fabulous because you could play it sooo many different ways. Halo 2 sucked because they focused way too much on the on-line. Most over hyped game ever. The campaign was terrible, the level designs were boring (ie. linear). Nothing like Assault or Two Betrayal levels to be found - everything was so open in Halo and Halo 2 was so constricted and boring. Dual wielding just didn't work for me either - think that came out of focusing too much on on-line death match stuff as well. They lost sight of what made Halo great.

In fact Halo 2 was so bad it influenced my 360 decision...halo 3 just doesn't grab me anymore..they spoiled it with Halo 2. I'd rather go back and re-play almost any Halo level over anything in Halo 2.

As far as RFOM - make sure you START at medium - the easy level is too easy for anyone that has FPS experience and probably medium is too easy for you hardcore gamers. Just right for me.

Levels like Manchester and Somerset are fabulous in RFOM. Fabulous. Just crazy intensity. And learning to use the weapons creatively is half the fun and replay value.

My son loves the on-line death match stuff - and yes the 32 player levels are insane in RFOM - you won't be bored trying to find people The fact it's free and excellent quality, no slowdowns with that much stuff going on is the cherry on top. This game alone shows that the playstation on-line is as good or better than anything out there - and it's free

The Halo games are pretty good, but if you're a PC gamer you most certainly will not be blown away by them, to say the least.

I actually regret my 360 purchase - with the exception of a few games, I'm kicking myself for the $400 I could be putting towards my blu-ray collection. Once the ps3 was in my house, it's amazing how quickly I forgot it. It has only been turned on once since november, and that was for my son to play Viva Pinata. And he got bored with that...

Now it just sits on my home theater console, a permanent reminder of my impatience and that I actually believed that M$ would deliver on what they promised.

The ps3 has now become in my household what Sony intended it to be - a media center. It's my dvd player of choice out of the three I have, the blu-ray is awesome, the games are great - the free online kicks butt... for $600, it is the best value home entertainment system to date.

Yep. All style and no substance. Lessons learned. 5 years and billions of dollars and we get - Vista. Patterns of behavior.

Apart from the dual HDMI out Sony has delivered just about everything they promised and you can clearly see it's all in place to match the vision promised.

You forgot family photos that recognize and zoom in on faces, superb sound quality/processing, web browser that truly allows you go where you want today Unlike the other guys empty slogans that lock you in.

After playing Flow with the sixaxis, just waiting for the HD Eyetoy to give me the other half of the Wii capability as well...vision.

Oh yeah the PSP connectivity is pretty slick as well...

Pride and craftsmanship went into this puppy. Pride and craftsmanship. And it shows.

I suspect that many people who bought the 360 because they couldn't wait and the PS3 second will end up in the same place as you did. Love our Mac but it's been bypassed by the PS3 as the multi-media center. No Apple TV for us.

i have to agree, HALO is one of the most over hyped games for xbox, HALO 3 is certainly being given a lot of attention but IMO i think it would never measure up to something like MGS4 or even anoter GTA.

Sure, the next GTA is gonna be on the xbox 360 but i would really like to know how they're going to pull it off considering the PS2 and xbox versions practically maxed out the storage space of a DVD, and guess what, the xbox 360 is still using the DVD format, so i guess it's really gonna be an inferior version to the PS3 one.

Actually I like Halo 1 and 2 single player games. I wasn’t much for FPS games until Halo. Halo 1 had a great strong story that went with the game. Plus it was also a very good launch title for Xbox. Halo 2 was the continuation, but I believes it was rush out. Halo 3 should be great. Of course online mulit-player is great to play with friends and is why Halo is so big, but I still like playing the single player games. I personally still haven’t found a FPS game that I like more than Halo. Plus I read the Halo books after they came out and I enjoy them too, honestly I think I like the games more because of them. Is it the greatest games out there, I would say no. But FPS games I would say they best for me.

I played Resistance: Fall of man Demo and don’t care too much for it. But I sit down and play the game a little more when I go visit some friends in W.V.

You can't really compare MSG4 and GTA to Halo they are totally different types of games. I'm sure they both sell better than Halo.

Demo is well a demo.

I loved Halo and hated Halo 2. RFOM fell just below Halo when I initially played it in terms of gameplay - but was much better on physics, graphics and has even more open fields of play than Halo did - which is what made the orginal Halo so great and the lack of such what made Halo 2 so bad. You had/have so many different ways to play the level in Halo or RFOM.

Now that I've gone thru RFOM on the medium level I'm enjoying it much better than Halo. Halo (not Halo 2) was the only reason I hadn't completely retired our Xbox and now it's officially out to pasture. The music on Halo was a big factor of it's success - it's just superb in pulling you in - but the gun selection in RFOM is just killer now for me.

Try playing some of the levels restricting yourself to the non-traditional guns if you really want to push the re-playability even further. There is a lot of depth in RFOM. Far more than Halo and well Halo 2 is a non-starter.

Two players synchronizing their snipers in a slow-mo close-up to the head shot is a hoot.

The multi-player on-line is simply superb...

One other thing on RFOM..

I'm really a campaign fan not an on-line fan (more my son's thing) and RFOM has shortchanged neither party.

To me it was obvious that Halo 2 really shortchanged the campaign folks by catering more to the on-line folks. The levels were really uninspired in Halo 2 campaign. And the dual-wielding nonsense was for the hardcore gamers not the more casual gamers as well.

RFOM have created a full experience for both camps...which is the way it should be in terms of value and focus.

I find it silly to even compare the PS3 and the XBOX 360. I have both and enjoy both for different reasons. I use my XBOX for gaming (if you don't like Gears of War you are not a true gamer!) and my PS3 for Blu-rays and exclusive games to the PS3. I like the whole achievement score set-up the xbox has for thier games and it truly gives you a sense of accomplishment when you "unlock" the whole game.

I guess the point I am trying to make is technology is great, embrace it even....but please don't just slam something just to slam it. Now my opinion has nothing to do with the Bluray vs HD-dvd.....I like blu-ray and I hope it wins, thanks for listening to my banter.

I'm with you T-Bone, (except for the Gears of War part ).

But yeah, I like each system for what each gives me, and am happy with my pruchase of both.
