donricouga: I used the service menu and turned over scan off and it fixed it. Alas, overscan will not stay off for more than one on/off cycle. I'll try to find a better solution for this.

Default Virtua Fighter 5 - best PS3 game yet

Not that that's saying much (right now), but the game is amazing. Gameplay is unmatched, the visuals/animation is tight, and the game is just a blast to play. VF5 is one of those games you'll spend hours on just trying to get the timing down on a combo. All the characters are balanced making all of them extremely playable (unlike a lot of other games where a lot of characters suck). I really recommend you guys go out and buy it right now. 10/10 IMO. Also, if you have the game and want to talk VF, post on this thread. I'm practicing a lot with Akira right now and I have to say that it's incredibly satisfying to pull of his combos. If anyone has any "custom" combos (juggles, etc.), please share them with me. Thanks.

Note: VF5 has a steep learning curve especially if you are relatively inexperienced with fighting games (or new to the series). Some characters are easier to start out with (Jacky) but even those characters are incredibly deep (they just have a lot more "beginner" combos).

The game looks amazing. Easily one of the best titles so far on the PS3. Lots of games coming out in March too so hopefully the PS3 will start getting more titles after a slow start (not unlike the Xbox 360).

I think, so far, the best title on PS3 is MotorStorm...

But, the screens of VF5 look amazing...

I like VF5 even more than Motorstorm. I have the Japanese import of Motorstorm and it's my 2nd favorite PS3 game after VF5, but lack of depth keeps it from the top spot IMO. Both games have great core gameplay and you can't go wrong with either.

Also, seeing VF5 in motion (not just screens) guys is a thing of beauty.

Well, I haven't played it, but did download an HD video of gameplay. It did look amazing, but I found myself thinking it was just an HD version of the same VF that's been around for ages.

Sorry, not on my shopping list.

i feel sorry for you helli3yte (sp). I'm a fan of Tekken too but VF is better and much deeper. Also, the reason you think it's slow is because you can't chain combos together because they involve more than just PPPK. Once you can, you won't be complaining about a slow VF (watch the exhibition matches between people who know what they're doing - the game as fast as Tekken). The combos in VF are more like down foward K+G, foward P, P+K (plus the timing is much stricter so even if you get the button commands right you may not pull off the move) - that's the only reason you think it's slow. I guess it's a game the casual gamer may never understand and always hate on.

Are combos documented in the manual or do they show them when they are unlocked in the game?

I ordered the game and it will be my first fighter since I played Street Fighter 2 on SNES.

They are documented in the manual and can be pulled up through the pause menu (command list). There is a practice mode in which you can practice basic moves/combos (the ones listed), but custom combos you'll have to figure out by yourself (and invent new ones!). There's no doubt you'll have to spend a lot of time in the "dojo" (a practice mode) practicing your moves (and timing), but pulling off combos in VF is extremely satisfying even against a "dummy" computer. If this is your first fighter since Street Fighter II recommend using a character like Jacky, Sarah or maybe Lion first (all of which are easier to start out with) - if you start out with someone like Akira you will be frustrated off the bat because his combinations rely hugely on exact timing (fractions of seconds - up to 1/60 of a second) and precise movements. Also, remember that the shoulder buttons are also used in this game (ex: L2=punch+kick+guard all at once so you don't have to press square+X+O) - basically check your controller setup to familiarize yourself with the controls if you're lost at any point.

If you have any trouble or questions, post on this thread. I can assist if you need help.

Yea it's really solid. I like it a lot. Features 1080i/1080p upscaling too (turn off your 720p output in PS3 and see for yourself)

Can't wait for F1 tomorrow too

wait so what are you saying exactly. here is my question. i have a jvc 56in hd-ila rear projection tv. its beautiful. i have the hdmi cable and all that crap. when i set up my ps3 i do the automatic thing where all the little boxes are checked. from what your post said. even if all those boxes are checked which resolution would be displayed if it was a 1080p game. i hope that it plays at the highest resolution possible.

I played it a little last night. It's still your standard VF game as far as I can tell. On medium difficulty I still struggle past stage 4 but that's on;y because I need to actually pick a person and start to master them as opposed to trying out everyone. The graphics and sound are great. I have yet to try the quest mode since I haven't decided who I want to play as.

I like Tekken 5 DR more but still picked up VF5 and enjoy it. Seems too much like VF4 with just a paint lift. I wish they had used better animations instead of the same old ones from VF4, they move still don't flow together well in terms of animations like Tekken games do. Also, the audio sound effects are horrid. Some levels do look fantastic some not so much. Lighting on the characters are nice even if they look like they are made of plastic. That said I still enjoy doing the quest mode.

i own it and i love the game. the graphics are awesome. good game to have when friends come over. the combos for each player listed in the manual are overwhelming. there are 4 pages of them in small print. i will never come close to performing all of them.

i hadn't played any VF games for over 7 years and getting back into the groove with this game has been difficult. especially, since the only fighting game that i've played is soul calibur. while the game is great and graphics are awesome, i can't wait for them to bring soul calibur to the PS3.
