Do you mean a 2.35:1 TV?
If that's the case, then in a nutshell, no. If you watch 16:9 TV/movies on a 2.35:1 display then you will have black bars up the sides. If you watch 2.35:1 TV/movies on a 16:9 display then you will have black bars across the top and bottom. |

The HD standard screen is 16:9, which is 1.77:1.
1.77:1 is so close to 1.85:1 that for all intents and purposes, movies shot at 1.85:1 fill the entire screen. But, movies shot in 2:35:1, which is very wide -- films like the Lord of the Rings movies -- have black bars on the top and bottom. |

If you're looking for a projection screen, the ideal one is always one that fills the full height and full width of the available wall space, regardless of aspect ratio. This means that any projected image will fill either the full height or full width of the screen, and therefore will be as large as possible. Don't be afraid of black bars, if you REALLY hate them you can get a masking system.
