Default The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea (1976)

The sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea Blu-ray

http://www.shoutfactorystore.com/prod.aspx?pfid=5257740

Quote:
Obsession and fate collide in one of the most controversial and provocative films ever made. English widow Anne Osborne (Sarah Miles, Ryan's Daughter) lives by the sea with her young son, Jonathan. The arrival of a rugged American sailor, Jim (Trouble In Mind's Kris Kristofferson), brings Anne the joy and sensual fulfillment she thought had gone forever, but her son is disturbed by this new intruder and joins a perverse group of fellow students led by the charismatic Chief. With its disturbing shock ending and frank love scenes, this stylish adaptation of the novel by legendary writer Yukio Mishima has become a timeless classic, with sharp direction by Lewis John Carlino (The Great Santini), powerhouse performances, exquisite cinematography by the legendary Douglas Slocombe (Raiders Of The Lost Ark) and a haunting score by Johnny Mandel (M*A*S*H). Beautiful, eerie and erotic, this spellbinder has been restored in high definition from archival elements to its original widescreen glory.

It is a shame blu-ray.com never did a review... it would be interesting to see some 1080p screen captures to see what this looks like, as I've heard horrible things about this disc. Apparently they didn't even bother to do any post production work on correcting the horrible, ever-shifting color timing.

Has this already been released?

Shout's website lists September 26, 2017 release date.

That's a shame because the old disc is putrid. One of the worst in my collection.

It is the worst Blu ray transfer I have ever seen. It's unwatchable. I watch the old DVD now.

Scorpion Releasing is releasing a new edition, due June 16. They're saying it's a new restoration from the negative.

A restoration would be nice as the edition that is out now is not very good

The initial blu release is one of the worst transfers I’ve ever seen. Unwatchable. Looking forward to this new remastered release.

Very happy to see this announcement.

I was looking forward to the earlier Shout release, but fortunately waited for feedback and obviously disappointed once that filtered in.

I haven't read the story, but I did find value in the film and have been wanting to see it again in a higher grade of presentation than what's on the DVD.

Due to the pandemic, my earning potential is taking a massive hit for likely the next couple years at least. I have to be much more discriminating than I've ever been up till now. This would be one of the few upgrades to make the cut for me though.

I was visiting friends in Los Angeles when this film played in theaters. I remember one of the testaments on the ad in the Los Angeles Times newspaper carried a quote from Bruce Williamson, a film critic for Playboy magazine. He called it "mature, sophisticated erotica." I was thinking "is he saying this is a porn flick?"

A year later I was visiting different friends in Los Angeles (I was 12 at the time) and found a copy of Playboy magazine that had a pictorial of the love-making scenes from the movie. Without anybody watching me, I looked at them and was like "holy s---!"

I would buy this movie easily if it weren't for that live cat dissecting scene.

The Playboy pictorial consisted of publicity photos that were taken in a separate photo shoot. They were NOT stills from the film itself. This has led to a lot of confusion, with people claiming that the existing home video versions have been censored because they don't include the shot of Kristofferson's face buried in Miles' naked crotch, which of course was never filmed for the movie. I think people who swear that they saw a more explicit version of the film 40-plus years ago are conflating their memories of the film with those photos.

It's worth reading Mishima's novel if you get the chance. It's quite superior to the film, fairly slender and is one of his more accessible books.

That's good to know since I was wondering about the claims that the movie was heavily edited to avoid an X rating.

Not seen it and interested, but I've a low tolerance of animal cruelty in films (actual, not implied). Grateful if someone can help me out with any details about the "cat" scene I understand is in the film and is mentioned here in an earlier post. Thanks.
