Default $299 Sony Blu-ray Player And Blu-ray Sales Edge

Here is a March 1st article on Blu-ray Gains Sales Edge This article might have errors in it. What is the deal with the $299 BLU-RAY player possible this year? This is news to me, is this information accurate?

Quote that I question the accuracy
On Monday, Sony Electronics President and Chief Operating Officer Stan Glasgow said the company will drop prices on its Blu-ray players significantly this year, possibly as low as $299, which could give Sony an even greater edge in the format war. Currently Blu-ray players retail for $999, compared with HD-DVD players, which retail for $699”

Also the link has a picture of a JVC BD hybrid disc. The hybrid disc is a single sided disc with a 25GB layer and a dual layer 8.5GB DVD.

With other companies trying to make money off of players I don't think sony would drop to 299 anytime soon. 599 is big enough drop in a short amount of time.

Yeah the BD25/DVD9 hybrid was demo'd at IFA 2005.

It was shown to work in both a Blu-ray player and a DVD player.

I agree.

$399 SRP is possible (which is $300 street with a 25% discount), but I can't see how $299 is possible before fall 2008, unless subsidized.

Agreed, Panasonic, Pioneer and Samsung would be so pissed if Sony undercut them, remember the main reason they got into Blu-Ray was to make decent profits on the Hardware again since the gravy train left as far as DVD goes.

I have no doubt those profile 1.0 players will drop as low as $299 this Christmas, if not lower.

$249 seems a bit low. i think we will see prices around $400 or so or even like day after thanksgiving $349 or something. but $249 is a stretch i think.

it would be nice to see somemore good BD movie sales, so we can stock up and keep the blu fever going

Prices are already $399 in places for the 1st gen Sharp, BD-P1400, BDP-S300.

$299 is not a stretch, $249 would be killer.

I believe Sony, Panasonic, Sharp and Samsung will all have very low prices on their 1.0 players this Christmas.

possible? the 40GB PS3 is $399.99, and probably one of the best (and will remain this way for a while) Blu-Ray players out there.

Not only that, if someone can get their grubby paws on a 20GB PS3, you can get the Blu-Ray player for $379
