Default Pina (2011) - Avoid, avoid, avoid if it gets US Blu release

I went to see this 3D film last night in a movie theater, and though I barely retained my sanity to the end, there were many times I wanted to go screaming from the theater.

Most of the film is filled with weirdly interpretive dance sequences that were crazy enough to make you want to bang your head against a wall (some of the dancers actually did that), but maybe it wouldn't have been so horrible if we were told what they were supposed to be interpreting. I discussed it with one other person (there were only four of us in the entire theater) and I said to her that "Okay, she (Pina, the choreographer) wasn't crazy because these people swore loyalty to her for so many years, but from these dances...no, she was crazy."

Let me give you a few examples...

A dancer comes out with two pieces of meat, and yells, "This is veal!" And then she dances for several minutes with the veal in her ballet slippers.

One male dancer is walking along and another places a branch on his right shoulder, then another on a left shoulder, crux of the elbow, and so on, until he has several balanced on different parts of his body. That's it.

A female carries a pillow on a real rapid transit vehicle, making monstrous noises with every step, while a male dancer sits at the back of the vehicle wearing some kind of weird animal-type ears and doing nothing.

One female dancer carries a potted tree on her back around a lake. No dancing, just carries a potted tree around on her back.

One woman throws shovels of dirt at a crouching female dancer.

And this is just a small amount of the two hours of "dance" that have you going "WTF!"

It is no wonder the dancers in the film all looked so miserable when interviewed!

I've noticed this is available on Blu in other countries, but if it ever gets here, avoid if you wish to retain your sanity.

Just because you didn't like it, doesn't mean it's horrible. Different strokes, for different folks.

I think it's up to everyone to see if they like or dislike a film. But that being said, Pina is not for everyone. I own the german Collectors Edition and do not regret it one bit.

I'm actually tempted to watch it now, just to see how bad it is

Yeah, the 7.5 IMDB rating, 83/100 Metacritic rating and the 100% top critics rating on RT really seem to agree with you.

Maybe you should have read what it was about and watched the trailer instead of walking into it blindly.

And worse off it was nominated for an Academy Award and directed by that hack Wim Wenders!

Art is subjective. I saw the trailer for this film and wanted to see it and missed it at the theaters. I read the 3D was impressive. It was also nominated for Best Documentary Feature and was Germany's entry for Best Foreign Language Film. I've never been one to shy away from art films-- I try to keep an open mind-- and will definitely check this out when it comes out on Blu!

Seems to me that no one is allowed to say anything negative about the film or about Pina's choreography, or else the Pina fanatics will come after you with a bat.

I went to this because the woman I was having a date with thought it sounded interesting. She ended up hating it, too.

Being nominated for an Oscar doesn't necessarily a film is great. Look at "Nashville." I knew Wim Winders directed it and that raised my hopes "Pina" would be good.

Not entirely true. I was at an exhibit of his work this weekend and one passerby noted, after pausing a moment at one piece before hastily moving on to the next that "well, looking at this one he knew how to do something."

Looking at the IMDB rating, they seem to have listed them in terms of number of stars. When you get to the bottom of page three and all of page four, you see a bunch of negative views of the film:

I know nothing about Pina, and the subject matter doesn't interest me at all. But your original post is incredibly pretentious. This isn't the section to discuss movie impressions first of all, there's a Movies section for that. But more importantly, what right do you have to tell everyone not to buy this because you personally disliked it?

Noting that you're a superhero fan, would you not mind at all if I made a thread in this section with the title "The Avengers (2012) [insert superhero movie of choice her] Avoid, avoid, avoid the US Blu release"? It's incredibly ignorant of you to attempt to give a warning about a purchase just because you didn't like a movie. Now if there was something technically wrong with a Blu-ray then giving someone a heads-up about it is acceptable, but not because you didn't like the damn movie, that's bordering on immaturity.

Those are for reviews. The ratings aren't very spread out, with the majority being 8 or higher

Wow....You think maybe because you're using the filter "Best" which ranks them from best to worst?

I listed the review here because there is no U.S. listing for the title for me to respond to. I am sorry you feel so aggravated by it all, but I am not sorry for the review.
