Default Help with Buying new TV

Hello, I am frequently on here buying blu-rays and reading about them. But I really need a 1080p LCD or Plasma. I want to know how the community feels on the LCD and Plasma debate and also Which LCD or Plasma to get. I'm looking around the $0-$1300 mark. Around 37"-50". I am a college student and this will be in my dorm room. I already have a PS3, blu-rays, ps3 games, and an HDMI cable. So can you help me? Please post links, and help me pick out my HDTV and when the best time to buy it will be. I'm looking for around the summer. Can i get old models on clearance then for the new models coming out?

( sorry if i rambled, but i have alot on my mind...)

I will have a new pole every 2-3 days. For size, lcd/plasma, when to buy, etc.

I'm engaged, and will have a single room next year...

realistically, in a dorm, I'd say keep it down to 40" at most. We had an old as hell 27" hotel TV that sometimes worked. It got more use as a dry erase board.

If your going to have this in a dorm room, I would wait for a while until you get out of there, unless you have alot of money laying around.

IF you're in a dorm I'd go with a smaller LCD display(say around 36"-42"). I know what type of crazy stuff goes on in dorms and futureproofing for a decade is going to be very hard with your budget. I would be worried about a plasma getting damaged. Maybe a budget 1080P LCD from someone like Vizio or Westinghouse or Olevia.

In the world of 1080p, bigger is better. When I was in college, I seem to remember rude friends and beer getting on things where it dosen't belong. You don't want to trash a nice TV. Keep it simple. A 32" LCD will do. Works well as a computer monitor also. By the time you get that big job and a house, you will be wanting OLED to future proof your investment. I majored in mathematics / computer science.

I really the Panny listed in my signature (since I can't really remember the exact model.) Great PQ, nice sound, good anti-glare coating that doesn't distort the picture like others do. Picked it up for about 1400 at hhgregg, but newegg has for 1299 plus 99 shipping.

I say the smallest TV which does 1080p. As TV's get larger, so do the pixels, so it does have SOME impact on the picture clarity. Which is why I never liked HUGE SDTV's.

Besides, do you really want to consume all that power just to watch the 6 o'clock news? Get what fits the room, not your eye balls.

1080p HDTV 42" or bigger, nothing will catch up to 1080p for awhile, we are only at 720p for a standard and most SDTV's lasted that long. HDTV's are made to last longer, so if I just go big now and get the best, I see nothing in the next 10 years to overcome 1080p especially since blu-ray is just starting!

You talking to me? Guess what, in the future people's eyes will still be bigger than their stomachs. Therefore, you will ALWAYS want the bigger tv. What good is a 50" 16:9 HDTV when you can barely sit 8 feet away? Again, get what fits the room, not your eyes!

You will not be able to futureproof yourself for 15 years. For one, the backlight on your set will have dimmed by then and you will need a new one in about 10 or less - depending on use. Secondly OLED tv's will be all the rage in a mere few years. Once you see that sitting in the local store you will look upon your "old set" with indifference.

If you read the hours they are supposed to work, i figured for about 6-8hrs a day is like 12yrs... And i have seen the OLED TV's didnt impress me, its still 1080p, when you calibrate a TV, you can make all look eerily similar unless its a Walmart, or Best buy off brand. I also will be about 5 ft away from the 42" and if you look at the distance you should be away from it, that is in the range. But that is only for one year, so if i have to suffer for one year being to close until i move to an apartment, then i can live with that.
