I read in an english review site that the Onkyo BD S809 has better sound than the Oppo 93. The pictures are about the same.
What is the consensus of the owners? Last edited by sonic_debauchery; 04-07-2012 at 04:32 AM. |

If you guys are looking for video processing I'm pretty sure that the Oppo's the no brain-er. Not because it will do better necessarily, as they have the same Qdeo chip, but that the Oppo is $100 cheaper and an awesome machine. Also, the Oppo comes with Wifi capability through an included dongle, the Onkyo does not. If you are planning on viewing any PAL content on your player, the Oppo can do 50hz to 60hz conversion whereas the Onkyo cannot.
Hope this gets you started. PS. I have the Oppo 93 and it's a badass piece of hardware. Wouldn't trade it for anything....other than the 95. |

Thanks umich08 you have some good points.
I prefer a wired connection so the wireless dongle is a bonus but not necessary. I like that the bds 809 has independent block construction. One for video and one for sound. The black levels on the Onkyo are apparently outstanding. (THX CERTIFICATION?). The oppo 93 offers quite a bit of features. Most of which could be handled by the receiver. (spotify, you tube etc). I wonder if it came down to a core comparison: VIDEO and SOUND which one would have the edge??? |

while i have no doubt that the onkyo player is good, i'd think they need at least one more generation of that design to truely compete with oppo as oppo is the leader in the blu-ray player market at and even above it's price point based on sales, repeat sales, pro and consumer reviews. they have done incredibly well with their 80 series and now even greater reception for their 90 series of players. that's gonna be a tough market for Onkyo to crack.
and yes, i am an onkyo man but i will be staying with oppo for now but for my next gen purchase, who knows. for right now, oppo does my blu-ray player needs & onkyo takes care of my pre-amp and receiver needs and i am very happy with that combo! ![]() |
